As of July 16th 2004, the 'refurbishing' plan appears to be more like a demolishing plan. Cedarwood, Crestwood, The Administration BLDG, the Education BLDG--all gone! The laundry bldg and mess halls are still there, very gutted but still cool. As for the power plant, that has been refurbished, apparently into the office for the new development that's sucking up land just to the south of the demolished buildings. It's kind of surprising that a town like Woodstock would not do more toward preservation.

Architecture has only two enemies. Water and stupid men.

Yes, it's confirmed. I goy my teeth "scaling" (cleaning) done on Thursday. My dental hygenist was small talking, UE came up and she told me she sees the place daily, as she commutes to Waterloo.

Sad. By the sounds of it only remnants of demolished buildings are left.

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years.

What a shame. More beautiful architecture smashed under the heel of "progress". I bet the new place is going to be shiny, glass and chrome. Blech.

I was also past the site a few days ago. All the buildings execpt the mess hall had been torn down. I was fortunate enough to go through all the buildings early this summer before they had been torn down. Although i never got in the building that was across the street(think the laundry building) before it was torn down last year i believe.

What a horror story this entry turned out to be. Almost the entire complex has been levelled? How many of the original 22 buildings are left? ONE?

Browsing the galleries I noticed almost no interior woodwork in these buildings while they were still standing. Does anyone know what happened to it all?

Locations like this piss me off. Here in Montreal we trash our heritage buildings pretty regularly. I had hoped small town Ontario would do better. What a letdown this turned out to be.

More to the story than that. When I moved to the area (and out again) a few years ago I asked some of the locals about the place and they were more than happy to see it being demolished. Apparently the "nursing" staff was very abusive towards patients and one story in particular I remember was about how the nurses would let some of the patients out onto the grounds and throw their food down at them from a balcony. I have no way of confirming any of this but the general populous I spoke with seemed pleased to see it go citing "bad memories" about the place. Myself? I wasn't heavy into UE'ing and I missed out on exploring the now demolished beautiful main building. Honestly I figured it would wait for me... I also remember hearing about a cemetery on the grounds, I'll get out there this summer for sure to see it for myself before its covered up with soulless housing.
