"Southern Point" Naval Station

This place has been on my bucket list for quite some time and I was finally able to do it this weekend. Magnificent place.

I don't explore that often, but when I do I try to get to places I really want to explore. I can say there is an incredible group of people in the Bay Area that are willing to help and go out exploring. When I first became involved, I was greeted with great people and an epic exploration of Fort Ord.

I'd love to see someone put an expo together, think someone might make that happen at some point?

I used to put things together all the time. Haven't done it in a long time. What kind of things are you thinking?

Cold war era. Still one active building on facility, belongs to US Government. Would not recommend getting too close as it still deals with classified items and I am sure there is VERY good passive monitoring. Rest of the place has been turned over to California Parks Service. Closed in the 80s I believe. There is an archived thread under the real name of the facility, if you are a true Californian, you will get my reference of the name. Not to sound snooty, but I don't want to give away this location too easy. There is still a lot of prime photography to be done there (not too much tagging for it's age) or vandalism. I parked my car in the trees by the main gate and used camouflage netting on it to further hide it as no matter where you are parked, you are exposed to the main road and CHP or Sheriff can spot you REAL easy, especially during the day. At night, they won't see you unless they drive all the way down the road (50 yards straight from the main road), but be very judicious in use of lighting because there is no business for lights to be there for any circumstance and I think 99.9% of the time, local law enforcement will investigate a light at night. Plus there is the fact that it is overlooked by another building of the Park Service and they have a damn good view of the entire facility. I would recommend going on a nice day or foggy night.

EDIT: Be very careful, this place is a scrapper's heaven. All copper and wiring is still intact. There is no evidence of any scrappers ever being there. I am sure local law enforcement knows this too and probably why a good eye is kept on the place.

This was one of my first big explores. Glad it's still there.

Last time I was there I saw someone hauling off a refrigerator. They somehow had a key despite not looking official at all.

Cut a link in the two chains on the two fences and add your own lock. Viola, official.

Oh and without giving too much away... that is not Area 51...but-- Area 51...

Would have been interesting if it ever happened, but tunnels that far... highly unlikely.... That's all Art Bell/Coast to Coast AM stuff....

Clearly you've never heard of the Alameda-Weehawken Burrito Tunnel. The tech has been around for almost 100 years.

This is a fun fun area to explore. I really wish Ord would stop getting so thrashed.

Did you happen to find the other neighborhood?

Any signs of life there, like CHP or CalTrans worker residences, or have they all bailed by now?
