You can't buy a pair of jeans and expect them to work at a wedding, and slacks are impractical for everyday life. Ideally you have a different harness for caving, climbing, or lineman stuff. UE can be a bit of everything depending on the day. You should decide what sort of structure your rope will be tied to most often and work around that at first. Lots of people have different climbing skills on the forum, take their specialties into account. As an EXAMPLE - If you're into mine exploration or caving pay attention to OpenTrackRacer's posts about techniques and gear. Or, for instance, if you're more of a infiltration climber then Wolfmaan has some excellent advice above. DONT go to a climbing store/department and expect good advice on caving/mining/UE (or vice versa) I've had very knowledgeable people tell me completely the wrong thing - in so far as taking that advice could have killed me. Buy the book "On Rope" and read read read AND find a person to teach you.
