Group size

I was wondering how big the UE groups out there are. My group, (we have been alternating between the names "Reclamation" and "Bored Middle-class") is small. Three people. I like it that way, keeps things quiet. Some groups out there (I've checked out the Wraiths.org) seem pretty large. I'm curious as to your thoughts on the subject. Also, what are your rules with friends? I'm all for breaking in a newbie (which I am not, although I'm new to UER) but it can be hard to tell who's serious and who's just like "Wow, that sounds fun!" I hate the people who whine and get scared when it's cold and dark and illegal. I have encountered this when meeting up with other groups i've met around. In general I don't bring other people in. The newest person in our group just seemed...well...like he'd take it seriously. Anyway, I thought it would make an interesting topic.

SUE is more of a collective with people popping in and out constantly. One mission there might be 6people and the next might have two. The one thing that is constant is that I am involved in every mission because without me there would be no SUE(hope that does not sound egotistical)
Everyone involves themselves somehow(through photographs, car rides, scouting etc etc) but lately I have found that many members are losing interest so lately its only been me and my friend Mat who are putting any effort into this.
Sometime I meet up with other explorers like cjbsexx or with UEM(on their many UE montreal meet-ups) but its usually only me and no one else in SUE who meets them

That's standard. Real groups are rare; most are just one motivated person and whoever they drag with them.

My group is def. a real group. Me and one of the other guys have been at it since we were in high school. YOUNG high school. Long before I had any idea what UE even was. What about roles within groups? I'm pretty much the scout/researcher in R/BMC...

There's quite a few members in my group (UEL). Originally it started out as just myself, and two others (Citizen-X and Jerry), and has now grown in size to 11 official members, of which 8 are active. Usually though, no more than 4 or 5 people are around on any given mission, usually less, so large conspicuous crews aren't an issue.

Like most groups though, there are the dedicated members, namely myself, King Pie, and Sneaker98, (previously Citizen-X was the most hardcore out of all of us, before his paranoia of being caught, his parents, and various other things caused him to cease almost all UE activity). And the rest who all have various levels of interest, mostly depending on whatever location we're planning to see.

Can I take add a slightly new angle to this topic? I've always found certain missions are better suited for larger or smaller groups. Does everyone do this?
For example: going into abandoned buildings there could be anywhere from 2 to 20 along for the ride - all dependant on where it is and what security, if any, there is. For the more high risk shit, like subway tunnels, I've always found less people to be the goal. Heck, I rather go solo down there half the time, since there are places where if a train comes, and you have say, 5 people, there might not be enough time and space to get everyone out of the way (more than 10 years ago we lost someone down there. damn shame. He was young and in his prime. I guess that made us all a little more careful).

Anywho: Does everyone try to adjust the location vs. group size ratio?

Ideally, I'd bring everyone I could to some places, but the logistics are just not rational sometimes...

With me it varies quite a bit depending on the place. Anywhere from 1 to 8 people have gone on trips, but the standard fare is 3 or 4 for abandonments and usually just myself for live sites. The only person who goes on all the trips is myself as they pretty much don't happen unless I organize them. I also do all the scouting and research on locations as well as taking the majority of the pictures and running the site. Nobody else in the group is really willing to do live infiltrations, so I go alone. Ocasionally others will spot some place or hear of something from another person and tell me about it, and then I'll research it and we'll go check it out. I wish that there were other people in my group who took a more active approach, it would make it a bit easier on me. I guess for me it's a curiosity that has to be satisfied and with the other people it's just an entertaining thing to do every now and then.

Right now it's just been my friend and I exploring. I'm not a small fellow, and she's pretty fiesty (ROTC chick ;). But I would like to have probably one more, mainly for gang/hobo protection. I think much more than 4 and you'd start having problems with noise, keeping everyone together, etc. Although for exploring places like the Nike sites (places that are huge but have little/no risk of being inhabited or monitored) I'd definitely want as many folks as possible.

I cant believe there is a group that has more boys then girls. You should take a pic and cover the faces to prove that becuase I would never believe it. As for me I have run though 4 women on and off, and about ohh 12-14 guys. At one time we were running 6 people consistantly nearly every night for about 6-8 months. Average crew is 3-4 every time same people.

2-5 is manageable. I will go alone, but having one more person calms me down significantly. I agree with the Chinese: three is the best number.

My group is 2. Yes just 2. There is one other person who is fairly interested, and he goes with us with whatever gear he can pick up.

All my other UE friends are in groups/teams of their own. I sorta keep in contact with them and we share info.

That's pretty true, when I was exploring I usually went with myself. There was the odd time that I went with my brother and the time that I showed around EatsTooMuchJam and Tiger but other than that, all my missions were solo. There are urban explorers in Winnipeg, but I don't trust them as they wouldn't give me their phone number so I could contact them and generally, I usually went on a mission on simply a whim which a lot of people had a hard time with.

I used to have a solid core group but then people moved away and i was left alone so now it's just whoever happens to join me. And group size is often dictated by the locale too there are places where we used to take like 20 people and theres places i wouldn't take more than 3 or 4.

I find 2 or 3 people to be the best for stealth purposes.
Any more than that, and it just becomes a chatfest.
Not to mention, when you're with just one other person the creepy atmosphere seems almost magnified.

Yeah I've noticed myself finding places much scarier when I'm with a friend. Mainly because he's yammering on about how someone could be in there.

I like exploring alone for the adrenalin rush and the increased stealth, but I don't like the increased danger and the self-imposed limitations that I've decided to stick by (such as not doing anything too risky or stupid if no one knows where I am). I was part of a UE group (not really the leader, we were pretty disorganized) for a short time my freshman year until we discovered some of the drawbacks of poor organization (too much noise and bad collective descision-making leading to apprehension).
When I do explore with others it always seems to be one person at a time, for example I'll explore for a while with friend X, they'll get bored, I'll convince friened Y to go on a few trips, they'll get bored or too busy, maybe friend X will go a few more times or Friend Z will get interested, but it's rare for me to find more than one other person at a time (or in the same city even!) who's interested.

When I want to go somewhere I'll generally contact the usual people and it usually ends up that 3 or 4 of us go. The only times I've UEed alone were times when an opportunity happened to present itself unexpectedly. I generally don't like having more than 4 people because it just seems too noisy/chaotic for most places.
