I have some news - tomorrow (Sunday), I have arranged for myself a rare and exclusive tour of the Empress Hotels basement; the real basement, made up of dirt floor and ancient planks. Not sure if I can get away with pictures, but I'll sure as hell try I have also found out from the horses mouth, that underneath Budget Rentacar on Humbolt and Douglas holds a forgotten, and sealed off piece of the Empress's past... Tomorrow should be fun

Be sure to let us know if you find the secret submarine base allegedly located in the Inner Harbour. It's there. It's real.

If you look down by Harbour Air, you'll see arches. This is the remnants of old town. Infact you'll see some old buildings that have sidewalks that bisect them. The basement of Plaza Hotel used to have cobblestones and an old lamp. The old morley's before it became Fisgard market in Chinatown has a bricked up entrance (believed to be a tunnel under chinatown that connected the old police station). It was rumored that there used to be tunnels for chinese immigrants that went as far as Government house. I can't confirm that, but I've seen the bricked up areas and been in basements of older building in town and seen the cobblestone streets. I would say the tunnels are probably an evolution of several half-truths. Likely the remnants of old town makes it look like there was tunnels underground, when in reality it was just laziness of tearing down the old for progress.

So... what opium den network did you wind up discovering?

Well, *Jesus* was going into the ass of Victoria (not naming names) about 10 days ago... He has been online since then, so I can guess the satanic tunnelers haven't killed him... but I'm just wondering what's taking so long to put up some evidence...

Yes, I'm quite curious myself. I was there last Sunday (Nov. 20) exploring many hotels in the area and there were many a hallway/staircase that peaked my interest at The Empress. Please do tell us of your endeavors Jesus.

Um...maybe they got him, turned him, and now he's one of them.

A Satanic security guard. Is that redundant?

Why can't Calgary have fun tunnels like this?

I recently found these tunnels nearby my friends neighbourhood. They go ridiculously far in all directions and are pretty large. 10 feet underground with big cement walls. VERY interesting and worth further exploration. I'll post more pics soon.

By all directions you of course mean two, and by ridiculously far you mean a few kilometers, but yeah, that is a great drain. Coming up on the Hall of Wonders for the first time is wicked, in spite of the graffiti.

2?, there were three directions, one into a circular tunnel which led into a tunnel half the height of the original corridor, I went further down it tonight and it just kept going and going, never did get to the end. Here are some more from tonight.
That is the end of the round tunnel which turns into half the original sized one. (the third direction)
I appreciate your constructive criticism kowalski, my excitement got control of me (non-sarcastic)

Hey, it's cool, I forgot about the junction, it's been almost two years since I was down there.
|
|
Ya I saw your previous pitures, very cool, there was all these white spiders down there, tons of them. How far did you go down the ones which get much shorter? Any ideas of easier ways to get down them like on a skateboard or something?

Download the map off the Friends of Bowker Creek website, or the CRD site that anvil found. It shows everywhere that Bowker Creek and it's tributaries go underground. http://www.bowkercreek.org/ http://www.crd.bc....r/bowker_creek.htm I haven't gone very far up the small side tunnel you are talking about, I don't like walking long distances bent over that much, hard on the back. But it's supposed to come out at the Cedar Hill Golf Course. You can also check out the creek to the north of the north entrance to the tunnel you were in. If you keep on following it upstream it goes underground again. You can access it through manholes on Shelbourne. It's smaller, and smells bad. There are also a couple places where the creek goes back underground downstream of where you were in, although these aren't as long. Have fun!
