Trying to find the history behind a location. Any help?

Hey guys I'm kinda new to urbex and my research skills are limited and I'm trying to find the history behind an old building. Before I explore a location I usually catalog the history of the building but I couldn't find anything initially. So I just went and explored the place anyway. I explored the location way back in January, from what I saw it was an old police training facility; targets and UTM shells were littered all over the place. But there was evidence of things prior (see pic 4 an old sign about something about chairs). From the research that I did do after I could only find that the building was adjacent to a storage facility that may have housed police or movie props/equipment but was burnt down in late 2020.

Older google maps street view pictures show that the building was painted with a regency advertising sign for what I believe was a cellphone ad; but unfortunately any evidence of such work was painted over by both street artist and whoever took it upon themselves to paint over the enter ad. Other than that my research into the location has reached a dead end. I explored the place two more times to get more info but the place got worse every subsequent explore, and the last time I explored it I took my girlfriend there and a homeless man followed us out. Furthermore, the building was featured on the news after a arsonist set fire to the second floor and two people were trapped, but luckily they were rescued. It is likely, however, that they were caught and charged and the building likely is much more guarded than it was previously.

In conclusion, any help finding any concrete history behind the building would be helpful. I'm just cataloging the history of it for fun. I will PM anyone I find trustworthy with the location of the said location and any more information I can find.

Shit I'm embarrassed, so to clarify, does anyone know any resources I can use to find the older history behind a building. For example, previous owners, what the building was used for, etc. I've tried everything from the rookie forum and I keep getting zero results.

It depends on how far back you'd like to go. If you're looking for a pre-war history, the Library of Congress has Sanborn maps online and the city directories for the city in which it's located will be of enormous help if you cross reference the address.

If you're looking for more recent history (i.e. the last 20-30 years), then you will find a lot of info using the Internet Archive and/or pulling up property tax records from the county's assessor's office. Lots of different mouse traps outside of that to get at what you're looking for.

If you PM me the location I might be able to dig around a bit but can't promise anything.

I'm currently interested in the history of the building in the last 20-30 years. I don't think the building is very old, I have a hunch its just was a storage facility but I still want to check.

I location scouted the building back in early 2008. (If this is the one south of the 10 on SP street)
It was donated to the police department in about 2010 as a giant tax write off, before that it was a mix of clothing manufacturing/retail/wholesale and warehouse use.

You can google the address and some info comes up, but because it's not a real significant building there isn't a lot about it.

I plugged the address multiple times and never got info like this. I already messaged tunnelbug and he already helped me find basically the same info. But needless to say thank you, I very much appreciate the help. I kind of envy you, you got to see the building before it kind of went to shit after the fire. Do you have any pics of that time?

Happy to help another sleuther. It may not be what you're looking for, but it's common for buildings to have an innocuous history. In any case, feel free to pm me any time.
