Requesting Access
< on 4/17/2009 5:00 AM >

I have a few questions, but first, some explanations.

First, there are two really amazing abandonments near me I want to check out. One is a Naval prison abandoned in the 70's, and the other a State Hospital abandoned in 2004. Probably with both or at LEAST the Naval prison, getting caught is not an option. I found contact information for both places, buuuut...

Should I even bother calling about gaining access? Has anyone requested access to an abandonment and actually had it granted? Should I make up some lame story about why I want to visit, or just tell the truth, that I want to take pictures cause I think abandoned buildings look cool?

Almost everything I have locally is by permission because I keep my nose clean locally, It cant hurt to try the legal way.

If you really want to do it though and you dont want to try the legal route then do so at your own discretion.

I'm not sure which hospital... but there isn't a single abandoned hospital still standing in new england that isn't doable.

The Prison. Rhymes with "sports-south". You will not get permission. Don't go there. EVER. Unless you want a visit from the NCIS. They are probably watching this thread already.

Lies are a poor way to win someone's trust.
It may be impossible or difficult to get permission for either one,
but it doesn't hurt to try. Persistence and patience may pay off in the long run though.

A friend of ours gets into almost all the sites they see by permission,
and have virtually unlimited access. The world is what you make of it.

I say always try permission first. Many of times they can't grant it due to liability reasons. Some people will ask for money. A denial usually is caused by the first. If that fails F it and go in anyways.

If you aren't so hot on the whole trespassing thing, definitely ask first. Be sure to make it clear WHO you are and WHY you want to enter. In my experience owners will do their best to be accommodating for "urban photographers" whenever they can (liability, as mentioned earlier, is usually the biggest barrier for this).

After all, what's the worst they can do? You'll just get a reply in the negative.

1) Why not, you have nothing to lose and can give it a try even if they say no.
2) Yes.
3) Be honest, you are a historian and enjoy historic locations. Do some background research and spit out some facts to them when you speak to them. Don't lie and then get caught up in a lie.

You should always try to ask. It is really amazing what you can get if you just ask for it.

JC

I can vouch for that; JC is a social engineering NINJA.

Personally I've never had the social engineering tactic work, despite trying it quite a few times with varying approaches, so maybe I'm not the best person to give advice (I do know plenty of people who have had it work for them) but I will say in regards to "lying is not the best way to win someones trust"...there are lots of ways that you can tell the truth but...just make it sound a little better than it is. If you take pictures, always refer to yourself as a "photographer"...or for even more points an "urban photographer" or "historic photographer." It makes you sound a lot more professional, and it's not a lie. Say that you'd like to shoot the photos for your portfolio. Most serious photographers, ranging from hobbyists to professionals have a portfolio, and if they don't, it's on their to-do list (and for a lot of people it stays there for a loong time). If you're OK with a small lie, say that you're working on a photo essay on the effects of the economy. Stuff like that is difficult to prove wrong and not a particularly harmful lie.

Should I even bother calling about gaining access? Yes. It is free to ask.

Has anyone requested access to an abandonment and actually had it granted?
Yes and Yes

Should I make up some lame story about why I want to visit, or just tell the truth, that I want to take pictures cause I think abandoned buildings look cool? You should have a legitimate sounding reason.

OK, bs DJ Craig. You got into that one place with the rednecks with some social engineering, and I'm sure if I thought about it I could name others.

lolz I did get into that little abandoned restaurant with the rednecks that way. And I got to explore all the control rooms and lighting rigs and other awesome shit at the planetarium at Bays Mountain, but that's because I've known the guy that runs the place since I was a little kid. I guess I have gotten legit access via proxy (JC) a few times, but JC was the social engineering ninja involved there.

Try doing that whilst wearing this tee shirt.

Age is definitely a factor. Seeing as I look about 17 ... getting permission to access places is not likely. I do pride myself in my SE abilities as far as getting information out of someone goes, though.

It can definitely take some social engineering skill to extract useful information from people who say things like "Oh, so you like explore abandoned houses and sewers and like stuff like that right? I went down this like tunnel in Johnson City this one time when I was like really drunk and it was a huge like 30' sewer that turned into like a steam tunnel and then it was like a hydroelectric damn except for it connected to like a huge abandoned international airport, but I don't remember where it was because I was like...drunk but like I think my friend Joe might have been sober but like I forgot his last name."

That naval prison... stay away from it. Getting onto the base and into the prison is incredibly difficult, and they wont give permission because they've been dumping hazardous waste in one of the wings, so thats a huge liability for them. Its a nuclear submarine base, so who knows what the hell that shit is.... Plus, its darker inside than any other place I've been in because its borded so tight.

The hospital, on the other hand, you could probably get a tour of if you played your cards right. Not many people know of it though, so keep it quiet and PM me if you want any more info.
