Royal Oak Middle School

I snapped a few pics with my cell phone of the interior of Royal Oak Middle School days before it closed for good. Built in the early 1950's with heavy timber, this was the third Royal Oak School which served Royal Oak and area in Saanich. The building was showing its age, and was removed to make room for a new townhouse development. Painted on the hard wood floor in the gymnasium with liquid paper, a student left his or her mark with a simple “good-bye”. A week later the school was demolished.

Read this:
Until the 1990s, all manhole covers were made locally. Patterns were identifiable products of individual foundries because each shop prepared their own unique molds or casts. Melted iron, combined with carbon and other elements for strength and durability, was poured into molds; each hardened piece is machined so the cover fitted into a perfectly matched sleeve. Ron Betts and brothers Gord and Jim know first-hand that making high quality manhole covers requires skill and back-straining labour. All three worked at Victoria Foundries before opening their own Langford shop, aptly named Achinback Industries and Foundry. They specialize in custom casting and patterns in aluminum, brass, and bronze because they can’t compete in the cast-iron manhole cover market any more.

Today, new manhole covers come from China. Chinese covers are cheap, mass-produced, unremarkable and sometimes poor quality. One split right down the middle when he moved it recently, Rob Hathaway said. As the Shaw Cable worker deftly slid a Victoria-made cover off a Toronto Street hole with a chain and pole tool, he added: “Old covers like this one, though, they are still solid.”

Interesting indeed, horse traction, an important part of history, glad they were concerned the beasts wouldn't fall. NK, obsession is a sweet mistress/demon child, and you have it for the covers Can see your book now; Manhole covers of the world. Stay the course, use the force...

I met someone a while back who had heard rumors of 'gambling' tunnels under Chinatown, and decided to check it out. He started asking questions, and claims to have found several shops that have these 'accesse's'.

He's a no b.s. ex cop, and persisted in asking and inquiring. Soon after his friendly inquiring, he started noticing well dressed groups of Asian businessmen gathering short distances from where he was knocking on doors. They then told him to get out of Chinatown, and stay out.

He also recalls an old restaurant that had a map of the tunnels on the wall. Probably a quick guide for those transporting goods/opium/hookers around town. And of course the bonus to avoid the rain...

I may see this person again in a month or so, will ask more questions.

Yeah...this is an article that I stumbled upon last year too. I figured old manhole covers equal old and elaborate drains, but JP assures me that Oak Bay is unremarkable for drains bigger than the standard 200mm. Too bad...

Wow...that was my middle school back in the early '90s. I went there the other month to play some volleyball, confident that I could find my way around to the gym only to find that it was yet another school that was revamped in Victoria.

Great pics! Weird how they bring back awkward memories of preteenhood...

Hello

As you can see I'm new here. I've joined up because NinjaKlutz told me to (we met on the trip to China he has told you about). I've done a little bit of urban explanation in the past without knowing it had a name or such a community going on. I'm very eager to get into it some more and I'm willing to do what's necessary (research and what not).

I'm always amazed at how many UEers stumble upon the UE community thinking that their experience is isolated only to find out that there are many people out there who have the same interest. That was certainly my story too.

Welcome Zenarchist...

To further introduce myself I like to mountain bike and also enjoy parkouring. As you can see from my first post "...urban explanation..." I'm the type to rely heavily on spellcheck as typos are a common occurence, (I'll do my best, I know persistent spelling errors can be annoying).

I have a few questions, I'll throw one out to start. What constitutes a location? There a few roofs I like to climb onto. These are roofs of active buildings and there isn't usually anything to see on the roof except bad graffiti. I mostly go for a place to hang out and watch sunrises/sunsets. If anyone is interested I can take pictures and post them next time I go up.

A few weeks ago while I was rummaging through old vinyl at a thrift store up island, I came across a 1960's recording of a live performance recorded at the former Century Inn (Victoria Plaza block, aka Monty's).

The album cover reads "Century Inn Presents Bevan Gore-Langton On His Keyboards In The Persian Room". I recognized the building in the picture, which prompted me to do a little research on the building.

In 1911 the hotel opened as the Westholme Hotel. In 1966 the hotel expanded and was renamed the Century Inn. The pub opened in 1954 renamed the Centurian, where Monty's Showroom Pub is located today. The Century Inn had an Arabian theme. A screen capture from a late 1960’s film shows a similar view point seen on the front cover of the record. This concludes today's history lesson. Class dismissed.

Zenarchist, rooftops are totally urban exploring, aka 'Infiltration'. A site doesn't have to be abandoned to be exploration. I mean, Ninjalicious did a whole internet thing on exploring the off-limits parts of BC ferries!

That explains everything!

And agreed, NK. Infiltration can often be more fun. Theres nothing like avoiding security and pretending to be an employee. Besides, the abandonded stuff here is few and far between. Most of it is locked up tight as an anti-hobo precaution, or abandoned for a damn good reason.

thanks, i've actual read the story about the ferries on the Infiltration website, it seems gorging oneself at the buffet or freezing on the upper deck aren't the only two time passers for the journey.

I've heard rumours about a massive storage basement under my school containing old relics and what not. Atleast one of the janitors knows me by name so I think i have a good chance. If i get access I'll be sure to get pictures and report back. I convinced one of the schools nicer teachers to open a suspicious door for me this week, it contained a cool looking pump mechanism but no basement/tunnel access or torture chamber containing the persistent texters them teachers hate so.

There is also a house rather close to mine that is undergoing some big renos, it's way up on stilts right now and I think it looks really cool. I want to get underneath the house and snap some pics before they build the basement or whatever they are doing. If I do I'll share them.

...just don't be one of those heros who ends up with a house falling on his face because you stepped/tripped on something that was important to the suspension of the house.

I'm surprised - and slightly disappointed - that no one has done an April Fools Joke on UER!

I was going to do one, but the only thing that came to my mind was about Ninjalicious. And thats a little off side... =(
