Nice Shoes?

Ok so I had a great pair of gloves on last night thanks to the girl I was with but I soon figured out why I, ME of all people was allowed to carry the damned maglite and the good gloves.

I found myself up two large metal staircases after hopping a 12 foot fence made of plywood and traversing a field of rubble and brick.

Holding this cord in my hand, I began to climb up the three story wall.

Yes, I be 5'5" and 130 lbs of upper body strength. Skinny as hell and quick.

Did I mention I can climb like spider man? Well NOT in my running shoes. I knew I'd end up climbing after the conversation went toward me not being so big and strong like my friend was. Because I'm little, quick and agile I went exploring with someone strong enough to throw me up to ledges and roofs if need be.

Anyway.

I need better shoes.

I want something that will protect my feet, my friend that I went with is into industrial more than anything, last night was a local warm up but I do really need better shoes to protect my feet from electricity, debris...etc

But heres the thing. I want to be pretty much feeling like I'm barefoot for the climb.

I was a barefoot kid in trees, I'm a monkey. I climbed a flat three story wall using just a wire with no issue after I lost my shoes and heavy coat.

Looking down was great. Look, you're up HERE, the wire stops three feet below the ledge (had to bare face it or fall I hate bare facing walls)
Aaaaand below the wire was a metal stair, also a nice ways up that would have hurt to fall onto, if I managed to fall onto the tiny stair and not miss it flying not three, but four plus stories into a large pile of bricks.

I had to take my shoes off to go up and down this wire, I lost shoes on fences and they didn't provide me with much protection either.

What kind of shoes are good for climbing? AND keeping you safe in an industrial or highly cluttered/dangerous area?

I wear combat boots. Waterproof, warm, light as hell and they have very good grip. I have 2 pairs of combat boots i use depending on where i go and what is needed.

My general exploration shoes of choice as long as it's not snowy out.

-Lightweight compared to boots
-Pretty much all I wear, so they're as good as me being barefoot in terms of agility.
-Pretty sturdy & safe against general debris. (just keep your eye's open for nails)
-Not to bad for climbing and getting grip on small 1/4" ledges.

Though if climbing is the primary purpose, you'd probably be better suited with real climbing shoes.

See I cant do the boots thing I'm a climber. Boots mess me up. Too heavy. I'd rather wear ballet shoes.

And if you painted yours black I swear I have that same pair of shoes.

I was thinking along the same lines as you are, with those and I wore them last night.

Not the best choice!

I used to have a pair of Pumas with this really unique tread on the bottom. The best way to describe it was - a bunch of nipples. Those things clung to fences, had great traction, and were really light. They held together for 4 years.

So of course they had to stop making them.

And at last I resolved to scale that tower, fall though I might;
Since it was better to glimpse the sky and perish,
Than to live without ever beholding the day.

Vibram Fivefingers - I've never used them, but they feel neat and a lot of people like them. I guess that's true of any $80+ weird shoe though.

But they don't look protective at all... this is going to be a situation where you will have to make a compromise because it seems like safety shoes and agile shoes are opposing forces. I fence and in my sport the ideal blade would be strong, durable, and light as possible, but the issue is that strong and light are like oil and water, so you have to decide which is more important and how much your willing to give up on characteristic A to have some of characteristic B

Are those the Abdul-Jabarr's? I wore those in '78.

If you want to climb, try 5-10 sticky rubber trail runners. Same rubber they use on their climbing shoes.

Any good hiking shoe will do and hiking shoes are generally built tougher than athletic sneakers.
I prefer Garmonts in the winter and Keens in the summer.
Go try on some Merrils and Vasques too.
Ultimately, who cares what I wear?
Did you know dsankt explores in flip-flops if it is over 32F?
Did you know NickSan wears knee-high biker boots year round?
Ryan P. wears whatever he steals from some poor schmuck @ the YMCA.
People have different tastes in footwear.
Go try on shoes and buy some you like.

Well I have this figured out now thanks, you guys are amazing. I'm going for those five toes because they can be easily carried.

With me I'm the kid in the trees like that, I need as much sensation as possible and I cant have my ankles covered.

I do wrap but I don't like shoes...

Either way I could pack some steeltoes for inside and pop the fives in my bag for quick access!

Oh yea and flip flops *squee*

For those of us that don't want needles and grossies in our feet....

I actually have denim armor.

I explore like I'm in a video game, I'd be a cloth/leather wearer combo priest/rogue

True to life!

(Treasure hunter and Minister)

I have a denim apron with pockets, one legged jeans with padding in crucial areas and hooks for a flashlight that look pretty much like my regular hey I stand out but fit in punk style.

The best part is I look like a boy. But if I take my long sleeve shirt off and wrap it around my waist the apron makes it look like I'm wearing a skinny summer dress and I just pull off my hat and pants. My bag looks like a normal bag any girl would have. I'm bi-gendered so it all works out!

I just bought these last week

only $80, wore them 2 days before going on a long weekend exploring trip (spent roughly 24hrs on feet exploring over 2 days) and they worked out GREAT! Didn't kill my feet, kept them warm, great traction. Only drawback is they have a side zip so they aren't going to keep your feet dry if your walking through any puddles, flooded basements, etc. etc. etc.

Fivefingers do not come on or off quickly, lol. Try 'em out at a hiking store; took me about 5 minutes...

I recommend approach shoes. These shoes are made for hiking, but also with easy climbing and rock-scrambling in mind. In fact, I knew a guy who climbed 5.11s and higher in worn out approach shoes.

I was just checking this topic to talk about those, I found a pair in a store near my work and picked 'em up just cause they looked pretty cool. Then I realized that they weighed about as much as my high-top sneakers. Which is my second recommendation:

I've been wearing these for about half a year now, they last so much longer than Converse (for around the same price nowadays, pretty steep still to be honest) but they've got wicked soft soles and are basically like a second skin. They SUCK when wet though. They're like racing slicks for your feet.
