Hey everyone, thought I'd share some pics I took in the abandoned North Lake Park in Irving recently. Just cell phone pics, I'm going to have to get back out there with my real camera soon.

This is a pretty cool area - on the other side of the lake you can see the power station that's construction I assume led to the closure of this park. I only explored the western half of the park and found some picnic shelters and the old bathrooms. As you can see from the amount of cow shit in the pics, cattle graze in the park now.

I especially like the pic of the tree growing up in the middle of the picnic shelter.

The bathrooms were locked up, which may be a blessing as I was a little nervous about going in there - saw a coyote in the area and I think he may have lived in there.

Thought the 24" gas line was kind of cool too - also slightly alarming as it looked like a washout had left about 15' of it hanging 4' or so above ground. Yikes!

Two things:

1. Did you see the old model airplane field?

2. I hope you didnt drink that water or swim in it.

There were a few people that died out there in the 80s I think, something having to do with submerged power lines.

No I didn't see the model airplane field, I think that was on the other side of the park and I didn't cover the whole place, I'll keep an eye out next time.

Submerged power lines, huh? That's pretty interesting. I definitely didn't go in the water, it's got a somewhat unhealthy look to it. Was thinking about bringing my canoe up there but that might be a bad idea.

In my old garage band days, we used to play out there at the pavilions. The lake, itself was made as a cooling lake for the power plant and stayed really warm year round. Once when the water was really low, we were walking in the cat tails and something big went splashing into the water. We asked the Farmers Branch cop who was out there about it and he said it was a 4 or 5 foot alligator that had been there for years. If you look at it with Google Maps, you can see the old model airplane landing strip and I think the old covered viewing area may still be there.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

How long has it been closed? I've only been in DFW a few years and don't know much about the history of the park.

Last time I went out there it was my senior year in high school so 97, it closed between 97 and 99.

Something about bacteria, there used to be signs up warning folks to stay away.

*edit* just read some stuff about the lake on a fishing website. Seems it was closed because no police department wanted to take the responsibility of patrolling it. It is actually Dallas property but sits right on Irving and Coppell's borders.

LOL one guy was talking about "ninja fishing", another yahoo chimes in and says "ITS TRESPASSING AND YOU WILL BE THROWN IN JAIL"

I love that tree growing under that shelter, gotta love it when nature takes back its territory.
