I've recently started scouting this place that has a guard dog. It was roaming freely inside the fence, but later there seemed to be barking coming from inside the building. I'm not sure of the best way to deal with it and thought I'd ask for advice. I checked to see if there was any mention on the subject in other posts, but I couldn't find anything.

I envy paranoids; they actually feel people are paying attention to them.

buy a bunch of 99 cent of hamburgers and carry them up to the fence and give them to the dog until he gets used to you being friendly, carry a few inside and be cautious.

Just curious, but what kind of dog is it?

I'd probably just stay away, but I play cautious when it comes to animals. But, if you're really set on exploring this place, become it's friend like the others suggest. I'm pretty sure they're trained not to make friends, though, so be prepared for this to take a long time.

spray it with a fire extinguisher. this works quite well apparently. This is from an article I read.

He went to say that the fire extinguisher is used to control dogs during arrests and raids. By discharging the extinguishers at the dog the police are usually able to render the dog harmless and secure him without further use of force. "The dog just runs into a corner and calms right down; we grab him, and no one gets hurt." he said.

So how many people explore with fire extinguishers?

Now, I'm not one for animal abuse of any kind, but the best way to show a dog whos boss (or keep it from killing you) is to hit 'em in the nose. Apparently that's the "oh shit this guy means business" signal.

Do that to a gaurd dog and they'll bite you're hand right off.

Use diluted mace if you think that its worth it. The dog wont be able to see or smell for a while.

EDIT: I don't condone harming animals, its just an idea

Well, if you knew there was a dog there, you could bring one! I would choose that over engaging in hand to hand combat with a guard dog.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT do anything to injure a guard dog. It is a serious offense and if you get caught doing it you are gonna be in for a lot more hurt then a trespassing ticket.

Besides the fact that abusing an animal for doing it's JOB, when it doesn't know any better, is just cruel and distasteful. If it's already attacking you once you're inside the fence and you didn't know it was there, well that's different, but to spray it to GET in... not so cool.

The food idea is doubtful. Sure you're feeding it and attempting to make friends with it from outside the fence, but once you're over that fence, you are in it's territory, and it's trained to protect it. You don't want to be second guessing that shit.

Is it a long way to the building from the fence? Is there anything you can see you could jump up onto right away to get away from the dog if it does come at you? Can you see an entrance into the building for yourself? If you circle the building, do you see any places where a dog might be able to gain access easily? Don't run blind my friend.

I really hate the idea of doing anything to the animal except avoiding it. I do NOT condone the following, but to offer at least a less harmful suggestion: Scent is a very powerful tool. They sell a spray that is similar to a can of mace, except instead of hot pepper it shoots a strong citronella scented spray. Cheaper too if I recall. Of course, I've heard mixed reviews on it's effectiveness.

Bitterant spray is pretty much self explanatory. Usually used to stop animals from chewing on wounds and stitches after operations, or to stop them from chewing household items..electrical cords..etc. It is some pretty potent stuff, and I'd *assume* it quite disorienting as well. These both will still get you into trouble if you are caught using them on the animal, so be aware.

That crap aside:
If you DO get inside and the dog IS unable to gain access, will it's barking alert neighbors in the vicinity to your presence? if it barks all the time then people in the surrounding area might not pay much attention to it anymore, but you never know!

Agreed.

It's one thing to tip-toe through someone's private property and take a few photos. Animal cruelty, a charge of mischief (or cruelty to an animal) and being an asshole to an animal just protecting it's territory, are not cool.

Honestly, I would just keep on lookin. A trained dog can easily kill a man, espically if it is one of the larger breeds. You never know how the owner has trained the dog: he could've trained it to go for the arm and disable someone. Or he could've trained it to go for the throat and keep shaking/biting its prey until it doesn't move anymore.

If they have dogs forget the location. If they are trained you will not make friends with them.

A friend of mine has a K-9 partner. This dog would come into work and see me. He knew I always have treats for him, looks forward to having his ears scratched and will lay at my feet just like any sweet little doggie. One afternoon his handler made a joking comment to me as he was leaving and I turned around in the hall pointed at the officer and said made a comment back. The dog did not like the tone or the quick move even though we were not even close to each other. It took 2 tries to call him back. When they are doing their job that thick steak is easily forgotten.

Yeah, injuring a dog to get to a location, not cool, not cool at all. I'd pin you down and make a citizens arrest myself. Seriously, I don't recall reading any threads about people discussing the best way to taze, mace and hog tie rent-a-cops. But somehow doing it to dogs is okay? It is WAY less okay than doing it to people in my books. If anyone on hear actually pulls shit like that on animals, then I would sincerely hope that the dogs get your balls, and the cops get your ass.

YEAH!!! What He said!
It's just a crappy old fucked up building, nothing needs to be injured, or worse be killed, in order to gain entry.
I'm proud to be associated with people that feel animals have a right to live here also. I have 5 dogs, and I know they would have my back if an intruder were to come along, they would unknowingly give up their life if that is what it took, just doing their job. And they do this for a crappy bowl of dry food and a pat on the head.

I pretty much agree. You need to weigh the risk-to-reward ratio. Is the location even worth the risk? If they have a guard dog, chances are their other forms of security are pretty tight too, and if you have the good fortune to get past the dog (which is highly unlikely), you'll probably end up getting nailed by some other security measure.

Unless it's the world's coolest location ever and you feel like you have to see it or you'll forever be kicking yourself in the ass over not going, forget about it. There are always other things to explore. You know, places devoid of snarling, drooling canines.
