Crazy and sad story from Detroit...haven't heard yet if the guy was a homeless person, a scrapper, or an urbexer. This is in the old school book depository building, right next to Michigan Central Depot. The homeless guys living in the building knew he was there too, just didn't do anything about it. Took 3 days before the officials did anything either, for that matter.

I think this thread is looking like the authoritative one on the story (there are a couple):

I saw that while reading some stuff online today. That's pretty bad. Elevator shafts have always been one of the things I watch out for big time in a building.

i'm a little pissed at the insensitivity of whichever "explorer" made this call to the reporter rather than just calling the police.
at least it wasn't the height of summer, though i have a feeling someone would've gotten him out of there quicker to get rid of the smell.

But if you think about it, he/she really had no choice except to do it that way, without jeopardizing their own situation.

Did he call the police?

"No, I figured someone else did," he said.

"There's lots of people coming through here with cameras and cell phones. I don't got no phone. I don't got no quarter. Things is tight around here."

His shack mate, Kenneth Williams, 47, returned at that point with an armload of wood.

"Yeah, he's been down there since last month at least."

He was asked if he called the police.

"No, I thought it was a dummy myself," he said unconvincingly. Besides, Williams said, there were more pressing issues like keeping warm and finding something to eat.

"You got a couple bucks?" he asked.

And the explorer who made the call to someone.

I think the Explorer did OK.

He got the authorities notified without giving away his ID.
(cops are funny, they like details, like name, age, address, your mug shot, how you found the body, your relationship to said body, why were you trespassing... et al----- oh and by the way, you're under arrest for trespassing, or at the very least, here's your citation)

He didn't desecrate the body. Not his fault the guys laying dead, frozen in a block of ice at the bottom of an elevator shaft. And time wasn't a factor in the body's recovery.

I think it was the smart play.

Bumsickle, popsicle legs, suspended in ice like a porpoising walrus, fodder for people's UER avatars... blah blah fuckity blah.

This was a person who was at one point an infant whose proud mother fed him, bathed him and nurtured him. He had a loving family and people who cared about him. At some point maybe he lost all of that and walked a different road than most of us.

However he was still a person, not an object and could easily have been any one of our own family members. Oh how quickly we tend to forget this.

I tend to agree with Sudbury here; in fact, I was torn on whether or not even to post the picture. On the one hand, it's an interesting case, and the picture really grabs your attention and brings home the sadness of the situation, but on the other hand, as Sudbury states, this guy was a human being, with every bit as much right as any of us to being treated with dignity and respect, both in life and in death, and I think there's no doubt that, to some degree, this picture robs him of that. So I would've hoped that the rest of us could resist the need to try and be clever by piling on with the 'popsicle legs/bumsicle/porpoising walrus' type comments.

boo fucking hoo...

Im pretty sure he doesnt give a shit about you and Sudsbury's heartfelt emotional outrage or my calloused indignity now.

(this just in: he doesnt even know he's dead)

I think youre more interested in grabbing attention than protecting the poor decedent's dignity and respect. Lots of people buy the farm everyday. Many of them get their pics posted on the Internet. (I can post some links for you)

And please note to mods for the record, I didnt post this guys pic Imbrolgio did.

I know who posted the picture, and I don't have a problem with the picture being posted in the way it was in this forum or a couple of others that I've seen (I may not have seen them all).

The picture, in my opinion, didn't do any injustice to the guy or the situation as posted here. It reports an event that some may feel is tragic (myself included) and others who may feel it's laughable (myself not included). But either way, it is a fate that could befall any of us in these buildings if we're not careful.

However, someone using it as an avatar, yeah, I do have a problem with that. Maybe it's just my personal beliefs and/or ethics, but I don't think it was the best choice people could make.

I actually started to try to reply to your comment above but quickly realized that any such attempt would clearly be lost on one such as you, 2X.

It's funny...you seem to be both insensitive and sensitive at the same time; completely insensitive to the unfortunate and undignified demise of a total stranger, yet actually quite hyper-sensitive to a relatively gentle comment I made about your tasteless "bumsickle" comment.

You must be a really complex personality, 2X.

Or, maybe you're just an asshole.
