Agreed and sweet I love kittens!!!!!

Also, the name of the site would have to be changed to UR.ca

I literally just thought the same thing. Click here to UR a friend.

The problem is, while the hexes may be somewhat dated, UER's current look is functional and usable. None of the designs I've seen thus far have inspired me; none have made me say "Yes! THAT'S UER!"

So, it goes on until Av is happy, or gets tired of spending his cash on electronic do-dads and decides to hire a professional. Don't hold your breath.

WTF indeed.

a web 2.0 is streamlined, meaning minimal crap that doesn't have to be there. A few good terms to think of would be the links mostly used, and their location relative to the top left corner of the main page. You also have to count in 'working' pixels vs. non-working pixels... meaning the more random crap art you have on a background, the less someone 'new' to the site will be able to find their way, meaning the less they'll stick around (maybe not on an individual basis, but when you're talking thousands or more, it matters). Um.. properly laying out your columns, etc. etc.

check this out for more detail:

http://tutorialblo...b-designers-april/

personally, web 2.0 sites aren't that big to me, and my tiny corner of the web (I think it's still there...) doesn't use it, but when you're talking massive traffic, it can be useful if applied.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!
Don't try to have a UER e-penis! You won't impress anyone! This especially means you, Minneapolis MN newbies!

Guys, this thread is over a year old now. I think it's pretty obvious that Av has no interest in changing the look of things around here.

Ha!

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

There's two reasons why I haven't done a redesign:

  • I haven't seen a really inspiring design
  • I started a new job about 1.5 years ago and it's been keeping me MUCH busier.

I don't think we need a new design. I bring this up every 6 months or so. What is good is when you make changes like you did with the photo sizing in the threads. I love that pages aren't hopping around on me anymore.

I like it, but the yellow text & brown background on the bottom of the page (donations section) seems a bit hard to read or causes it to stand out too much...

If we're going with an industrial theme, then maybe add some industrial graphics in that area, not just a flat color with text. The sidebar graphics should be flowing down the side, not stopped abruptly.

Take my comments above with a positive outlook. The overall design is great though. Good job!

It's nice enough, but it looks more suited to some upcoming strategy game, than to a contemporary website. Graphics-heavy is *so* 2002

Thanks. I agree with you that the graphics and flat colors aren't seamless, but I didn't want to spend more than the 80 minutes I dedicated to making this.

No offense, but it's a rather dated design.

I like the way the site is now. Everything is easy on the eyes, easy to find easy to read. Why fix or resdesign something thats not broken ?

sure its nice to switch it up, but Ive seen so many forums with nasty and hard to read layouts that their webmasters think are "u1t5a 1337" when their hard on the eyes.

I agree, having a simple background is a lot better than having an overly complex design, with lots of colors.

I suggest that you read this part of a web 2.0 guide, particularly the 2nd half of the simplicity section. It helps in pointing out useful-to-non-useful data on a page, something that should be used quite a bit more.

Yeah, the more I look at my design, the more I think of Doom 3D. Sorry, guys. I'm never designing late at night again.

Anyway, I do agree that the organization and proximity of information needs to be assessed. For instance, how often does everybody use the "Online" button, which more or displays the same information at the bottom of the forum index and in the status box? Also, Home and Forums seem redundant.
