allva and I are in mineral wells and we couldn't find a way into the baker. looks like all the usual spots are welded shut.

im posting this from my phone. if anyone in the area wants to hang out send me a pm. weve got a few other places to check while were here, so we'll be around for a few hours.

No entry? That's a first. I guess they're really keeping that place up now.

Ugh. That sounds like bad news. The only reasons I can imagine for beefing up security are 1) they're going to remodel it or 2) they're going to demolish it. As much as I'd pray for the former, I fear the latter is more likely.

Not sure how much truth there is to this, but I heard from several different people in that area that they can't demolish it due to the way it was built, it's size and how close it is to other buildings in the area. So... who knows.

One time when I was there, we asked around town about some of the history on it (not that we didn't already know, just out of curiosity) and NO ONE knew anything about it. One girl at a restaurant even said, "Oh... THAT building. That used to be a hotel?" I told her 'yes' and asked if she was new to the area. She said she had grown up in Mineral Wells and had been there her whole life.

So much for being proud of your town's history, eh?

That's amazing, that you could live in that town for more than about 5 minutes, not to mention your entire life, and not be even remotely curious as to what that huge, ornate building smack in the middle of town is, that's about 5 times bigger than anything else.

When I was there in late March, I found three entry points. I understand that at least one of those has been sealed up now, and I would bet that another fairly obvious one has probably been secured by now as well. But there's one other that's a lot less obvious that might still be there...

How many Dallasites have been to the corner of Houston and Elm, unless they were on their way out of downtown? I've lived here over 20 years, and I've only checked out the spot where Kennedy was assassinated three times -- each time with one of my kids and one of their friends, and each time the other kid would be largely uninterested (though the impromptu latrines of the homeless tend to elicit a more visceral response).

I think it's just human nature. Which is great for us... because our adventures begin where "normal" peoples' interest ends.

Man, I need to get in a drain.

Funny that you use that as an example... I lived here for at least 4 years before I realized that was where JFK was shot.

Hehe...unlike Happidaze, I was there almost immediately after I moved up here.

The thing is, Dallas is a bit of a different animal than Mineral Wells too; Dallas is H U G E...there's lots to see here, and Dealy Plaza, while incredibly significant historically, isn't like a physically large icon that stands out on the skyline or anything to attract your attention. In Mineral Wells, the Baker Hotel IS the skyline!

Haha.. true that.

I remember when I explored there with Allva... he made a comment that we wouldn't be able to get any lunch because we had no beaver pelts to trade.

Wow this thread got buried and I forgot to check it.

As for the state of the Baker - It won't be demolished. It's for sale. The chances of someone buying it and demolishing it are highly unlikely, as I'm sure the property with the building on it would cost much more than any other property in the area.

I'm thinking it will continue to sit there, as it always was, because there will never be enough tourism in such a tiny town to sustain it's operation, and it would cost more to demolish it, than the land is worth.

i drove through there just a few weeks ago and was amazed at how secured that they've made it. I stopped for just a second and took a few walks around. I couldn't spot a single way in, which sucks. It is a building that I have always wanted to go in.

if there are any future plans to go in...YOU HAD BETTER LET ME IN ON IT!!!!

lol

And then, it asks the question: in a cold, uncaring, ruthless world of corporate slavery and assembly-line experiences . . . how is it possible to still live a life with strength, and passion, and with a soul that is still truly alive?
