Draining For the First Time

I've been "urban exploring" for what seems like my whole life. But I had no idea that draining was possible until having found this site.

Now, before I get ahead of myself, I would like to break down a few things.

MY JOURNAL IS MY JOURNAL. No promises that this will be interesting to people that don't know me. Reader be warned.

I am a country boy from a small Texas town. Growing up, breaking the rules just seemed like the only thing worth doing. I guess that's how I got started in this.

Now I do it for the rush and the chance to see things that most people will never get to see. And I view it as a chance to get away from the mindless hassle of everyday life.

Now, I went draining near my hometown just recently, and took a few pictures.

I started out with the long drive back to the old town, Waxahachie. With no A/C, the drive seemed to last forever. I started at about 6 in the afternoon, and needed to make a stop at the local walmart for some flashlights and batteries.

I got an abrupt welcoming home that took me back, and forced me to remember how different this rural land is compared to the suburban world that I live in now.

This young bull was out of the fence and eating the greenery next to the road. I pulled over to see if I could snap some pictures and call the local police to get the beast back into a safe place. Before I knew what was happening, the bull was charging me, forcing me back into my car. Talk about a rush.

My phone wouldn't work out there, so I had to wait in my car until another truck pulled by and told me that he'd call the authorities.

I took an opportunity to take another picture to give the reader (and remind me) an idea of what my home was like.

So, after all of that was done I made it to the drain. I didn't get any pictures of us going in because we had to be very low key. The Waxahachie police department is right across the street.

Once inside, me and my best friend....I'll call him Mr. T...took a few pictures about 30 yards in.

Me.

Mr. T

The tunnel that we entered was very short lived, and then we entered an opening that had paved, brick walls. It was amazing. Not to mention hot.

We found several odd items through out this cavern. I found a screw diver and a shotgun shell. But Mr. T found the coolest thing of all.

We went a little farther and discovered that A.) My boots were not water proof and B.) Mr. T was way under dressed. We decided to push on anyways. What's a little water on your feet?

We came to an area that we had to cling to the wall, or get water up to our chest.

We got about half way in, and I realized how great it was that I brought some water. The air was stale and the heat was unimaginable. Even the cool, pools of water I would step in didn't give any relief from the humid heat.

We walked a little farther and then came to a low hanging chamber. I figured this would be the end of our journey, because if it got any lower on the other side, we wouldn't be able to fit, but we tried it anyways.

On the other side of the low hanging tunnel, it got larger again. As we walked we found a passage large enough for us to crawl up that led to a storm drain, so we could find out where we were.

Mr. T went up and discovered that we were directly under his old church. Appoximately 5 blocks away from where we started.

We decided to head back, knowing that we could always slip in under the church next time and pick up exactly where we left off.

mugs? too dirty? no such thing

And then, it asks the question: in a cold, uncaring, ruthless world of corporate slavery and assembly-line experiences . . . how is it possible to still live a life with strength, and passion, and with a soul that is still truly alive?
