My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased. Though we don't know that much about him, his interest in Hearn was, evidently, the same as ours.

What happened at Hearn is understandably devastating. It reminds us of the risks involved in this kind of activity, and being careful isn't always going to prevent an accident.

This is very sad indeed, my condolences to his family and friends.

On a side note, on my last exploration, I was on a catwalk, and the floor of the catwalk gave way... I almost fell. scared the shit out of me. That is one of the many reasons I haven't explored lately. It is scary to think that this COULD of been any of us. I too have been up in those catwalks in Hearn, joking about falling to my death, I think such thoughts have gone through everyones mind, when they are in such a location.

Hearn WAS an accident waiting to happen, and I agree that Hearn will likely, and SHOULD likely be demolished completely now. It is far past its prime as a 'UE' site. I think however that they should somehow keep or relocate the control room, and use it as a museum for electric power or something.

Also, I do plan on getting back into the hobby eventually.

Why do some people insist on talking to reporters?

This shouldn't have been made a public thread.

It began as a private thread and should have been left that way, with a second, public thread alongside. It defeats the whole purpose of having private threads if someone goes along and makes them public, by merger or otherwise, later.

Unless people want this thread getting quoted in the next round of news articles, a moderator needs to step up now and make it private.

I don't think talking with reporters is inherently problematic. Accidents like this need some context, and who better to provide that then others in the hobby. It isn't like the reporter wouldn't just fill in the blanks gleaned from websites and forums anyway.

Kowalski: Who cares?

I find that people worry too much about things said on this board 'getting out'. I'm not questioning your integrity with this comment, but if people aren't doing anything wrong, they have little to worry about.

I also don't see the problem in speaking to the media. I have worked for the largest media conglomerate in Canada and never had a problem with anyone I worked with. You just have to watch what you say because, as in Policing, anything you say can and probably will be used.

Maybe I'm just not paranoid enough, who knows...

It's not a question of whether people are saying anything "wrong" or not. It's a question of the context in which remarks are made. I know that my participation in this thread would have been different had it had the little eyeball beside it the whole time. I suspect that goes for others as well. Thankfully someone with power has listened and addressed the situation.

Public threads in these forums have been quoted in academic works, and after an incident like this there's a good chance that there will be reporters trolling for quotes here too. Since in my experience what's quoted is rarely given a generous dose of context and explanation, and is often flat-out mangled, I'd prefer to keep some margin of control over my own words and what gets attributed to me.

I hope you realize that a senior editor of a national newspaper is a full member on here then, fully able to read everything.

But, you do have valid points and while I don't agree with them, I do respect them.

That said - has anyone been by Hearn since this tragic event happened? I'm curious if there is any more (visible anyway) security...

Really? They should send me a message.

But seriously, I'm far less concerned by who's potentially a full member than by basic lurkers and random passers-by who have no membership and no understanding of the environment, attitudes and experiences of participants here.

Exactly the sort of question you wouldn't want to be asking in a public thread : )

Given that the site is presently subject to two open investigations, I wouldn't expect to see anything definitive just yet. There is probably a half-decent possibility that there will be a coroner's inquest down the road as well.

I guess it goes back to the same principal of not discussing entry points or the real names of locations. Techinically, just about everything we do in this hobby could be viewed as "wrong" by someone.

Kind of the reason some folks get into it, I suppose. Can we take a step back (not you, Yokes, everyone) and swallow our swords for a little bit before the inevitable flames start flying? It's sooooo overdone.

Oh that's wonderful. Maybe they should introduce themselves instead of lurking.

Hopefully this thread stays private which is how everyone who posted here intended it to stay.

Just a thought.. as the recent article includes a link to here, it might be nice to have a public condolences post that non-members can see.

Agreed. Regardless, it would be nice to have one without all the bullshit talk that is going on in this thread. I suggest that it be heavily moderated (which is odd for me, but I think a respectful thread is called for), so that whenever someone tries to bring the subject back to themselves, how elite they are, Hearn security, etc. that crap is immediately deleted.

How about the mods write something, and those who agree sign. That would keep the BS private -- and hopefully this thread stays full level access.

I think this idea would work well.

Oh, and if anyone besides Kowalski thought I was out of line with my comments early in this thread, I apologize. . . particularly given the sad turn of events.

EDIT: Exhausted-after-work typo.

Axle, did you get paid for that article? Half of it is just your quotations. Good journalism for sure.

[Mr. Chapman died in 2005 and publication has since ceased].

The article also seems to imply that Ninj perished in a exploration-related accident (as no other explanation is given and the article is based on an explorer's death). It's amazing the slant that journalists put on stories, no matter the content.

He has been caught by on-site security guards, "and they just kick you off the property." He's never been arrested.

"The fact of the matter with trespassing is, the most you'll get is a $65 ticket, and that's only if the police can find the owner and the owner wants to pursue this. You don't get put in cuffs; you don't get jailed."

Along with other items in the article, I'm not sure this was a wise thing to say.
