Just to clarify for Sailor's Heart, No UER User may remove a location after it is made public. I am not too worried about that anyhow.

This post is just concerning their photographs not the actual location listings themselves.

Oops, I was talking about what Av said here:

Sometimes we have to delete great locations because there aren't any photos, because the original guy who uploaded the photos decided he didn't want them on UER anymore.

I shoulda used a quote.

Why not just leave it alone but instead just give the users the full right to remove their content on a whim. I for one as a Photographer am Leary of giving anyone any exclusive rights to my material.

I just don't see why we need this discussion.

Simple - If you post them you CAN delete them also posting them on UER gives UER Authorization to Display them freely until they are deleted.

Why make things more complicated than that?

I agree with that.

So people get bent out of shape and ask for their stuff to be removed... So?

That's part and parcel of running a large database which accepts public contribution. Change it and you stand to loose pretty much any decent photographer who might be concerned about their rights.

You SHOULD be able to remove your stuff from here for ANY reason, being upset and pissy is one such reason.

Again, I would like to reiterate: Big Boy Pants.

This means that Av has to wear his Big Boy Pants, too. This change may, in fact, result in a mass exodus from the LDB, leaving me as the defacto best photographer around. It's all part of my plan.

Pant size is neither here nor there - and neither is being pissy. I'll reiterate (and simplify for you):

You SHOULD be able to remove your stuff from here for ANY reason.

When that's not the case, expect to see less contribution - and especially less decent contribution: imho.

Bad mood, fell out with the forums, legal troubles, location gets too popular, whatever: the overall reason for requesting the removal isn't actually all that important.

Chris...

It just seems like an incredible waste to me.

For some reason people have gotten it stuck into their head that when they leave, so should their content. This makes no sense to me...

I am simply trying to explore avenues to prevent this.

Yea People get pissy and leave for stupid reasons, If they no longer feel like sharing then let them go and take all of their stuff with them, Let them throw their little tantrum.

The question for them when they close their account.

Are you sure you want to close your account? (This Will Be Permenant)
"YES"
Would You like to leave your photography in place?
(Yes)- Allows UER to continue displaying your photo's in the LDB and the Random image.
(No) - Your Photo's Will be Irreversibly Deleted and will no longer be used by UER in any way shape or form.

I'm of mixed mind on this one, so I'm going to hold off voting for a bit while I read other people's thoughts on the matter. There are certainly strong arguements on both sides.

Doesn't the deletion of locations from time to time just mean that other people who find that same spot can just add it back in the future? Is there a wealth of top shelf locations that only have one set of photos?

Well That really is a Managment Decision to remove a location but it should not affect the ability of the user to retain control over their images.

Part of the problem is that a lot of content gets added by new members, and because of the eagerness, might not be aware of any potential pitfalls that come with contributing to the DB. After spending a year on this site, they may start to regret their actions.

I think that the rights of individual explorers are probably more important than the collective value of the DB. Given that, they should be allowed to remove their content or at least have it removed for them by one of the moderators. Maybe set up a "request deletion" button where someone can write the reasons as to why they want it done. I think that would prevent a lot of the "hissy fit" deletions that go on while still giving users some flexibility in controling content after it's been added.

I think the number of photographers who will pull their photos and/or not contribute to the LDB because of this rule will far outweigh the number of galleries we'll need to delete because a user wants to leave UER.

This seems pretty likely to me as well.

Well, as I already posted, any new rule that is decided here doesn't have to be retroactively applied. So there's no need to worry about people deleting their existing galleries.

Then why have it ? Two new rules, neither mandatory or just one mandatory to new comers? Not very fair - and the advantage isn't obvious?

It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me matey... I mean my parking lot at work looks much nicer when it's full of shiny cars, but I can't just go glue the cars down to stop them leaving!

And I think Sara is right - I know that even if I could opt out of such a scheme, I wouldn't want to contribute to anywhere that DID enforce that scheme on others, for something as random as time spent as a member of the site.

Good god, no. That would lead to far more hissy fits. But who the fuck cares about hissy fits anyway? Hissy fit away, bitch. It gets you no sympathy, except from other little hissy-fitting bitches.

Images should be either under the creator's full control, or not at all under the creator's control. I totally understand that people don't like the idea of surrendering some control, and that's fine. It's completely idiotic, but I understand it.

Unless I'm mistaken, there are essentially two reasons why people want to retain control:

1. Legal concerns that images would be used as evidence against the creator
2. Copyright concerns that the image might be sold, etc.

If there are other reasons, I would be interested to hear them, but I cannot for the life of me understand the concern about either of these.

1. Do not upload something if you don't want the world to see it
2. How can you be worried about a 72 dpi, highly compressed version of your image?

I agree with turbozutek and SaraBellum.

edit to add: Also, there is no option that fits me on the voting.

Guys, there's no need to get worked up about this. This is just a discussion of an idea, and no steps have been taken to implement it in any way.

MutantMandias has a point -- anything you upload to UER or anywhere else (flickr, myspace, facebook, etc), anyone can just take the file and keep it, and there's nothing you can do about it.

However, this is not what we are discussing here. I'm not responsible for what happens to your images after they are posted on UER -- all I can control is what happens to the files that UER itself is hosting.

Turbozutek: Any analogy that involves cars or toys or other tangible objects doesn't really work, since there is only one car. It can't be both in your garage AND in the parking lot at the same time. However, we are talking about COPIES of your image here.

Look, all I am trying to do is find a way to stop this "I'm leaving so all of my content is too" mentality. People should feel good about their contributions to UER, and they should want those contributions to outlive their own existence on the site. Sort of like leaving a memory of yourself behind.

Like I said, set it up so that users can fill out a request to have content removed. The moderators can be the judge as to whether or not it's necessary.

Forcing people to keep their content on the site isn't going to make them feel good about about their contribution, though. I understand where you're coming from and that it's frustrating, but I don't think this is the answer. How many people who've closed their accounts voluntarily have asked for their content to be removed? How many have closed their accounts and left the content up? It might be that you just have to learn to live with it.

Have to repost, I wasn't civil enough. :'(

1- Images sent into Wikipedia do not automatically become 'public domain'.
2- Why should we trust you with rights to our images? Didn't you keep UER passes in plain text for your own uses in the past?
