Read the sign... or get rocks thrown at you.

I went to San Antonio to visit my best friend for New Years. We drove around all day yesterday looking for cool places to explore. Since he's never experienced urban exploring, I thought I'd start him off with something easy... like an old house.

We found the perfect house to explore. Easy access, very old and decayed, neat architecture, but above all no signs telling us we weren't allowed to be there.

We stepped in the side door, which appeared to be the only entrance and exit and made our way into what was once the living room. As soon as we stepped into that room, something went flying past my head, missing it by about 3 inches. I looked at my friend and he looked terrified, yet ready to hurt someone if they meant us harm.

I stepped away from the window...

... and instantly something else came flying our direction from the door we had just entered.

I was more worried for my camera than my head. They were rocks. Huge rocks. We didn't want to peek around to see who was out there, for fear of them putting out our eye with one or something, so we just sat there a minute. About 5 more came flying in, so finally my friend stepped in front of the door and I followed.

About 10 feet from the door was an old man with a dog. (And a hand full of rocks.)

He started yelling at us, saying "This is private property!! I own all this land! I heard my dog barkin' and I came over here and you people have no business here! There is a sign, dammit! Can't you read?!"
All of his talk of his wonderful sign got me curious. I honestly had seen no sign. Normally, I would just walked away from someone like this telling me to leave. However, he still had a hand full of rocks, was mad, and was blocking our way to the car. I said to the man, "I'm sorry sir.. I didn't mean to upset you or trespass on your property. It's just that the architecture of this old house is so beautiful, I wanted to stop and take pictures of it. I didn't see your sign, or I never would have even THOUGHT about going into the house... I apologize." He looked surprised and said, "You like it?" I said, "Yes, sir." I held up my camera so he could see I was serious about taking pictures and smiled innocently at him. He said, "Oh, well... thats strange but I've had that problem here before... but uh... I guess... if you wanna finish what you were doing, go ahead. But you're responsible for your liability!!" I said, "Oh thank you! Thats so kind of you... I promise to not be long." He said, "Meh.. take yer time. Oh.. and um... sorry about the rocks." I told him it was no big deal and continued taking pictures...

It didn't take very long for us to explore this house. About 30 minutes max. I'm pretty sure my friend had enough urban exploring to last hime awhile though.

On our way out, I waved at the man and he waved back. I was thankful he turned out to be a nice guy.

Now that's a new one on me. I've heard of a lot of things, but never having an old man throwing rocks at you. Thank goodness it turned out to be harmless.

That is hilarious. Good job defusing the situation and on the pics.

Thats a lot better than running into some gang members. He's probably used to people coming in doing more damage than exploring.

Yeah, he said that he's had problems with squatters and drug users. He was probably as relieved to see it was a girl and her camera, as I was to see he wasn't going to take my head off with a rock.

Ah, you rock! (Pun intended.) (Am I dating myself? Nobody says "you rock" anymore but me, do they?) Seriously, you turned what could have been a nasty situation into a good one, and got some great pics in the process. I always love the artistic quality of your photos.

I guess you'll be lucky if your friend ever goes back exploring with you, heehee.
I took my friend for the first time last weekend,to a garge complex, and we later found out that it belongs to bikers~oops!

Is that a grave or memorial in the last picture?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I noticed it on the way out... to me it sure looked like a grave. *shudder*

Loved that set. Glad you stopped the old man before he took out your head or your camera Not sure would you would consider worse in that case

That pic of the grave is kinda freaky. It's like when they had a family member die, they just bury them on their own, it's not like that here at all. And I wouldn't guess that it's the best selling feature for the home.

Realtor "And over here, we have this stunning grave plot with only one spot used, plenty more room for later..."

Thanks, and yeah, we decided to split after the first 3 rocks came sailing in, but the problem was they were coming through the only way out... which was pretty scary until we saw it was an old man.

I thought the caption for the last pic would be, "And I'd swear I took a picture of the old guy, but when I developed it, there was nothing there but a weathered wooden cross."

(Or maybe that's because I remember the days when the visual medium called "film" required "developing", mkay?)

Dieu m'a exaucé.
