Guys! Come quick! I found the son-of-a-bitch who invented Comic Sans!
| | | Abandonments of rural Reno County, Kansas < on 1/16/2008 10:15 PM >
| | | For the last couple of years, I've taken a weekend out of about every month to explore abandoned homes and things around my hometown of Hutchinson, Kansas. I've been stuck in the middle of nowhere in the mud, snow, sand. I've been "talked to" by local farmers and inhabitants. But, I rarely ever leave a trace that I was at my location, except the footprints I've left behind me. I've recorded and logged much of what I've seen and discovered in each location. These are just a few of the exteriors of the many homes I've explored in my area Enjoy.

I plan on posting the interiors sometime in the near future. ...This is actually my first post to be honest. I wanted to give a hint of what I explore.

| | | The first one has a depot look to it. Was it a house, or could it have been an old depot? Nice shots and welcome to UER.

i was actually not too sure what this building was when I first came across it... it kinda looks like a house... the inside has a strange layout. It may very well be something else.... it's not near any railroad (nor abandoned railroads). Not much around it really. I'm going to guess that it is a house.

Yeah R. now that I look at it, total depot architecture. bet there was a line through there, lots of Kansas stuff got taken out (like everywhere else). Either that or someone like us that is a freak fo da choo choo.

A whole lot of those old depots got moved. I know where several are in this area that are no where close to any tracks, old or new. The railroad sold or gave away a lot of them and people would move them and use them for houses, barns, etc. This one though, I would bet, is an old depot. I'd bet 70 or 80 years ago there was a railroad within 30 miles of where it is now.

| | | I'm not going to rule out the possibility of it being a depot, but would they move the basement with it, too? or would they have poured a new basement for it? because it does have a basement. the structure is probably about 10 miles from a railroad. well... 10 miles from my town, which is like railroad heaven.
but anywho... here's a few pictures:
those are from the 2nd to last house on my initial post. they're just from the outside of the house looking in. I wouldn't dare enter, due to the lack of any structural support under the 1st floor. from what i've seen though, it seems like whoever lived there was a fairly wealthy farmer. the house is beautiful and fairly large. there are several other outlying structures... mostly sheds and barns. The house itself is on top of a hill, over-looking the river.
