| | | Railroad Depot < on 11/10/2007 10:43 PM >
| | | Well went out this afternoon and found something of interest. The following is a antique railroad depot that served both passenger and freight in North Texas. I believe it was built in the 1920s but am unsure of that. Really nothing of too much interest inside but I shot it anyway. Exterior Shots
I didnt fall under either category so I figured I was good to go

abandoned Engine
Cool rail junction
What did you think I forgot?????

| | | I think a crackhead must've written that notice, as that is not how you spell 'whino' At any rate, I too am a railfan so I like what I see. Not such a big railfan that I recognize the engine though, but for fun if I had to guess, by the colors of it I'd say Ferromex? The junction is indeed, cool.

| | | Very cool shots man. I hate to see those old depots just rotting away. It's so nice when someone cleans them up and puts them to use. That crossing junction is called a rail diamond.

There is one at Tower 55 in Fort Worth, which I believe is sort of abandoned. Not in use anyways. Tower 55 itself, I mean. [last edit 11/11/2007 1:34 AM by Mellon_Collie - edited 2 times]

| | | Very nice! I found one almost exactly like this when I was in Iowa. Sad part was there was no way in. Considering you're not a crack head or a whino then it was ok for you to be in there.

You're right. Tower 55 is abandoned but it is still in it's original location. Not too many of them are still around, especially in thier original location. They do still use it as office space or storage though and it's not in a location where one could safely get inside it without permission, just FYI. | | | Yeah you have to be real careful with Rail Yards.....its a main artery of the US. Homeland security doesn't look too kindly on trespassing there. Permission is definitely the way to go when dealing with exploring them. Most of the time if you show sincere interest in the railroad...they will accommodate your photography. Today I was lucky since it is a small yard. We used to jump trains when I was a lot younger but now I wouldn't even try that. And as far as the Grapevine Depot goes...most of the old stations in Texas are restored to that caliber. Of course there are exceptions but I have been to small town after small town only to see a gleaming depot that looks better than the majority of the town itself. You have to think the reason for most of these towns is the RAILROAD!

I figured that much just from driving past it every day, so I wasn't planning on it. I've hopped a few trains before, but got off before I made it too far because I've haven't been able to get enough time off from work to commit to it. I realize that post 9-11 it's considerably more risky to be poking about railyards, but I've never had to talk to a bull in the past two years that I've been doing so. Just like exploring any other place really - be aware, careful and use common sense. Not saying I'm invincible, but I feel that for me personally, the risk is minimal and acceptable. *shrugs* [last edit 11/11/2007 3:00 AM by Mellon_Collie - edited 1 times]

| | | From Wikipedia: John Luther "Casey" Jones (March 14, 1863 -- April 30, 1900) was an American railroad engineer from Jackson, Tennessee who worked for the Illinois Central Railroad (IC). In 1900 he alone was killed when his passenger train collided with a stopped freight train at Vaughan, Mississippi, on a foggy and rainy night. His heroic death trying to stop his train and save lives made him a railroad icon who became immortalized in a popular ballad sung by his friend Wallace Saunders, an African American engine wiper for the IC. He is the world's most famous railroad engineer. If the man says no winos or crackheads, I think we ought to listen.

| | | As much as I've been around the railroads I've never seen one of those before. Must have been maybe an old scale house, or crew change point? Never seen one of those though. You got me on that railroad picture 2X.

Its the old passenger platform. Two ramps lead up from a tunnel under the tracks.
