| | | Grain Silo < on 11/6/2007 10:24 PM >
| | | This is an old silo that was once part of a huge farm....It had a freaking awesome farmhouse that had a red roof. Unfortunately the house sat abandoned and vandals (most people say satan worshipers...OHHHH) burned it to the ground. But all this happened when I was about 13 so I was unable to get the house. Somehow the silo has made it throughout the years, although it has been vandalized pretty heavily.

Leapin Lizards North Dallas.....that sounds tough

Foundation of perhaps another previous silo??

| | | Can you tell us something about the economic/agricultural history of this area, about the social history of this farm, or about the linkages in either of these dimensions between this farm and places further afield?

Not real sure on what was harvested on the farm. But the farm was the home of a Confederate Officer who was one of the founders of this area. The family has streets and schools named for them.

| | | Maybe you could research the history of cement in this region as well, it would be interesting to trace where that came from. Otherwise it's just a meaningless and rather marginal ruined cylinder.

| | | Im sure we can at least agree on this, there were no satin worshippers in the marginal cylinder..
In another of the big-side tunnels, the Satin Worshippers have been hard at work. |
ps; knucklebuster you have to have a sense of humor around here I would be getting the same comments if I posted pics of a cylinder, even one of that magnitude as well, maybe worse! [last edit 11/7/2007 12:12 AM by Explorer Zero - edited 1 times]

| | | To clarify, I have ample respect for the idea of taking photos of structures like this one. I think you just need to go the extra mile in terms of adding meaning to it. I'm going through the same process right now with much larger, more complicated silos, so it's not even a question of the marginality of a particular structure (although something like this does highlight how important context is). Whether it's a 4 million bushel elevator or a single lonely silo on a farm, it's not enough just to photograph something. We need to work on understanding and telling stories about where it came from and where it's going.

| | | I don't know what it is about grain silos, but there are alot around here that have withstood the test of time and they are just standing there, unused behind shopping centers and near schools.

They're heavy concrete structures designed to withstand internal grain explosions, and are implicitly fireproof. Costly to demolish, and resistant to arson. Add to that the fact they've generally been built on marginal land that no one is clamouring to redevelop, and that their footprint is small enough that it's often easier to build around them than to take them down.

Just so I'm clear.... If I have a picture of a really nice something that I want you to see, I shouldn't post it unless I have a thorough history on where it's been and where it's going. Right? Ok. Just so I'm clear. I don't argue with you that it's nice to read what someone has uncovered about a place, and I encourage that. But I'd never go so far as to suggest that someone not post a picture unless they have an essay on the place.

I agree. Sometimes it sucks to have to read a lot of stuff to go with the pictures if the pictures are pretty self explanatory.
