This place is really cool, happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think most of you here in town will know what it is.

It really doesn't look very big from the outside...but its a pretty good size!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that he went to this place and tried to hide after assassinating Kennedy. I'm guessing that's the seat where they found him, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

You got it, but the thing is that is not the actual seat he was in,,,, its been marked like that for years. I guess it was lost with time?

I've never been inside the theater but would love to see it sometime. So no one knows now which seat he was in?

technically he went to hide there after allegedly shooting DPD officer J D Tippet and was apprehended for that offense while at this location

they just hung that whole Kennedy thing on him after the fact because he was a convenient patsy...

and the whole reason he got caught there is because he couldn't cough up 25 cents or whatever for a movie ticket so he snuck in. And he got his ass kicked by DPD for pulling a gun on them. Rodney King in the 60s YO!

Don't feel bad, I didn't even know JFK was shot in Dallas until after I lived here for 2 years.

Me: "Why is there a big white X on the road?"

Friend: "Thats where JFK was shot.."

Its all about that damned grassy knoll. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I don't think Oswald did it, there were several suspicious persons hiding around the grassy knoll that day. Its really quite interesting how many different variables there are, its definitely worth researching if you haven't done so already.

Yup... big white X painted on the road where it happened, right past that bridge that goes over that road. Just look for all the tourists standing on the edge of the road about to get hit by cars because they're trying to take a picture of it.

I saw on Texas Country Reporter that someone renovated that theater and is getting ready to reopen it.

You are correct, the Oak Cliff Historical Foundation (or something along those lines) I saw it before they had done any interior work. It is kinda in a questionable part of town.....but I really hope they make it.

I know we shouldn't name names, but 1) it's about to re-open, which makes it no-longer-abandoned, and 2) anyone who doesn't know that Lee Harvey Oswald was apprehended there needs to spend more time walking around the corner of Elm and Houston Streets on a sunny fall weekend. I was there with my middle daughter and her friend just this past Saturday, and trust me -- there are plenty of folks who will (for a small donation) give you the full story, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Grand re-opening set for Texas Theatre

Discussion of the renovation at dallasmetropolis:
http://forum.dalla...hread.php?p=272564

One thing noted there is that, though the theater was built by Howard Hughes in 1931, it will be restored to its look in 1963 -- the time period when it became (in)famous.

As for "questionable part of town" -- gimme a break. Oak Cliff is a working-class, largely Hispanic area. Very family centered. Show me a high-end suburb where moms walk with their babies and kids play in their front yards even as the sun is setting? Never happen -- they're too busy hiding behind their privacy fence, hoping the boogieman gets the guy next door instead of them. There are some rough parts, sure, but the area where the theater is located is as safe as your parents' basement. Don't be stupid and you'll have a great time, and you might find some new UE targets in the process.

Dieu m'a exaucé.
