Got grain? Louisiana style

On an admittedly much, MUCH smaller scale than the awesome Arkansas location istakebroad posted.

Thanks to Raticus for the heads up on this place. It's all of three minutes from my house and I never knew it was there (I don't feel so bad, though; one of my friends who has been in just about every place you can imagine around here didn't know it existed either, haha).

Despite the immense amounts of bat and rodent poo, the place was fun (though quite smelly). We didn't have much time to explore since I had to be at work later in the afternoon, so another trip is in order one of these days.

While walking around the outside looking for an open door, we instead found a rusty ladder that ascended half-way up the elevator and ended up in this room.

It had tons of interesting machinery, but it smelled so bad we didn't manage to stay long. I kept having to hold my breath just to stand it. Breathing masks are definitely in order for next time. I don't even want to know what unpronounceable illnesses I may have contracted.

The ladder went further up but didn't seem too sturdy after that, and none of us wanted to fall and land in the inch-thick layer of dirt and bat poop, so down we went to look for the door.

Before leaving, though, my friend spotted an abandoned passenger train car out the back, which we eventually made our way to.

We headed around the back to where the silos are. I have a question for anyone who may have seen something like this. Two of the silos were covered in orange, black, and silver gunk. I really don't know any other way to describe it. What on earth causes this? They both had signs on them that read "molasses", but I can't imagine molasses doing that.

Anyway, once inside we found some interesting stuff. There were some massive machines, but they were in areas so dark that I couldn't get photos, even with my tripod. A handful of rooms, such as the office, still had electricity. The lights were even on in the office, though it was obvious no one had been in the building in ages. One of the guys found a paper with 1998 listed as the date.

On a massive control panel in the office.

I don't know what my problem was, but apparently I didn't bother to focus this one. This is a view of the back from the abandoned train car.

Speaking of that train car; we climbed over several flat cars piled with rails just to get out back, then waded through 4ft- to 5ft-high grass to get to it. I was convinced I would wake up the next morning with a million chigger bites, but I was lucky this time.

We headed back to the silos where we found several cords labeled such as this

We also dodged wasps, spotted a dead rat in a bucket full of black goo, and briefly contemplated climbing the external ladder to the top (fear of heights prevented this, haha).

All in all, a good day. I've been so busy lately I hadn't gotten to explore at all since early summer, so this was a treat.

Can't believe I didn't see this sooner! Great pictures and an amazing post! I'm a sucker for shots with textures.

916 is my favorite. It would have been the OATS one had that bar not been there.

Nice shots, I like!

The orange black and silver stuff you described in the photos looks to be a layer of foam insulation that was painted black or silver, and is now chipping and peeling away. I could be wrong, but thats what it looks like.

I lived in near the Port of Albany growing up and used to spend time exploring in the area. There used to be huge storage containers of molasses. The containers looked like they were sprayed with insulation and then covered in a silver paint. I assume that they heat the molasses to make it more viscous, so it will flow. These look like they are also covered in insulation, tar and paint.

Nice pics!!!! Wish I could do that!

POtjm and JeepXJ, thanks for the explanations. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the stuff was.

Marost, these were shot with a Nikon D80 and Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4 AF-D lens.

Hopefully I'll have more time over the winter to get back to this place and explore some more.
