Power plant

As near as I can tell, this was once a power plant, although I suppose it could have been a factory. It's just south of the US 90 bridge in a largely vacant warehouse/industrial district of New Orleans that probably would have been worth exploring if I'd had more time. It wasn't technically storm damage, though, as it seems that it's been abandoned for decades. It's fenced off, but it not terribly well and it didn't look like there was active security. It might be an interesting exploration for someone who has the time.

That's the Market Street Generating Station. It hasn't been in operation in years. A friend of mine has been trying to get the demolition contract for the place for a couple of years now. The City of New Orleans wants it demolished but I guess nobody's slipped them enough bribe money to get the contract.

I missed an opportunity to get in there to take pictures a few months ago. From what I heard though, the copper thieves have stripped the place and there's a lot of graffiti and vandalism.

The buildings on Tchoupitoulas St. right in front of that place were recently demolished...Glazer Steel & Aluminum and Two-Ro-Pa Mills. Those were a really cool exploration. I have a bunch of pictures from in there that I unfortunately can't access right now.

Twi-Ro-Pa right before the last part of it came down (taken with a crappy cell phone camera). Picture taken from S. Peters Street near the corner of Orange.

Here's a pic of more of the building, probably taken from about the same spot where Beaker took his pics.

And Glazer Steel's canopy over S. Peters Street, now gone.

Anything industrial, or with machinery, gets me going. Boiler rooms, chiller rooms, elevator equip.... you name it. If it has machinery I get all worked up like a... well I get worked up.

I may be able to get permission to explore it...keys and all. Someone definitely has to get in there and take pictures before they knock it down.

The place is currently locked up pretty tight. Before the demolition of Glazer and Twi-Ro-Pa, the police patrols were pretty heavy due to the copper thefts. I don't know about now. Orleans Parish is not a good place to get caught trespassing these days.

What a coincidence; I just hit that power station up very very recently. Didn't see any po-pos. Although there are fresh tools and such, so obviously somebody has been doing some work. I heard that over the next six months they plan to do abatement and move the [very active] substation that's attached to the west side of the building so they can demo it.

It's still in decent shape inside BTW. Some of the turbines are still there, the control room is still pretty sweet, etc. Even teh graff is cool. Well worth the trip. 99% of my photos turned out shit when I went so I'll be going back.

An inside shot..

Yeah that's the old NOPSI power plant. If I get in there I'll post some photos.

myself and xYachtxRockerx did this place yesterday. One of the best sites I have done thus far and by far the best power plant I have done. It's sealed up pretty good but we managed to take about 45 minutes and create a way in (dont worry we sealed it back when we left). the place is very unsafe with giant sections of the floor missing and for many many other reasons. yes it has lots of graff and has been scrapped and vandalized, none the less it is still awesome and there is tons of great stuff to see inside. The top roof is by far the best part of it. pictures coming later this week.
