Why is it that posts from this (and other) threads suddenly dissappear without explanation? It makes it really hard to follow a discussion when stuff is just taken out.

You would have to ask Skelly why that last post disappeared. I don't understand his reasoning myself.

Might have had something to do with a certain liability issue. It´s been corrected.

Agent Skelly....deleter, and locker of threads, and posts??? Not to pick on any one mod, but yes it's true. It happens on many threads here. (The pirate tread...I don't even know why...I think so someone can get their kicks giving us a hard time). Often without a reason...or PM. I'm going to call him on the radio tomorrow (ham radio), and talk to him in a serious, unheard-from-me-by-Skelly conversation. I hope to hear what his feeling on the mods position is. Often it feels like a battle between the mods, and everyone else. He is a good friend, and we have some good debates sometimes. I would like to let him know some mods, (not necessarily him), are getting a little carried away (in my opinion, and many others). I would like to hear his feeling on this. I think there are a lot of mods who like to "use" their position ...for whatever reason...and it has very little to do with exploring, or protecting the community, and often more to do with getting their point of view across, and often not agreeing with others. It's my feeling things would not fall apart if some of these threads remained intact, and as is. You get a bunch mods trying to be a forum hero...and it becomes censorship....A thing, as an explorer that I, (and I'm sure you)...would like to have a few places in our lives...to be free of this. UER was not always like this, but change is ...well, you know. I, like a growing tree, can bend, and flex with the strong winds of change, but I to have a breaking point. This is not an ultimatum for anything...just an opinion, of which I am entitled to. We as Explorers..I think we can agree, stand for true freedom...in the physical, and free speech sence.

-Toad.

Edit..PS..I put this here...as i felt it was relevent to here, and here alone.

Never mind this bullshit. Skelly is a good fellow in my books, and if anything was deleted (or ´censored,´ as some might suggest) it likely came as the result of someone elses mis-step. Like maybe mine.

Whatever.

So...here I am in exotic Riu Vallarta, soaking up sun, lime juice and a fair amount of tequila. Mayan hospitality is flowing, and I have discovered the wonder of pool-side drinks served AT POOL LEVEL. Vury civilized.

I found myself siting at the bar chatting with a lovely woman from California who told me a mysterious tale about Mexicali, and some weird shit about a Chinatown that is reported to have a vast network of underground tunnels.

"It's true," she said. "You can read about it in Harper´s Magazine."

Good enough for me. In fact, I recall reading the article a couple of years ago. 'They Came OUt Like Ants.' Same sort of thing...Chinese workers, near-slave wage labour, etc. and they dug themselves a bunch of tunnels.

Interesting.

For those who remain interested, I have completed a short documentary titled (coincidentally) Under the Garden City. I missed a deadline for an upcoming festival, but I'm working on getting a screening series locked down for the coming months.

It will premier in Victoria. I'll post dates/times when they become available.

Chat over a coffee with some retired navy guy. Old washed out tattoos, faded and stretched...forearm stuff. Used to be an anchor and his ship's name, along with three or four girl's names. The old coot used to get around, but he married late in life and settled down and quit the navy and got a job as a marine consultant.

Back in the day as a young stoker, he used to drink in some shithole on Pandora St. Long gone now. Fights and broken glass on a Friday night. Tossed in the brig more than once.

So one night he's out with the fellas and they're all three sheets hammered and they were out causing trouble in Chinatown, pissing in doorways, yelling obscenities and singing crude lower deck songs. Not even the MP's would venture into Chinatown, my friend told me. It was rough and broken down and dirty and ugly and strange, but sometimes you'd find a good restaurant and eat loads of food for cheap, and maybe some nice Chinese girl would flirt with you, and there was gambling and you could really have fun as a young military man. Apparently, there were standing orders that ABSOLUTELY NO MILITARY PERSONNEL were permitted in Chinatown, so these guys were feeling particularly brave and/or adventurous.

He said that there's a fancy restaurant there now, but years ago it catered to um...less desirable...clientèle. He was one of them. He went to take a leak, took a wrong turn and walked through a door...closet, really...and there was a door inside this closet that opened to a staircase that descended 20 or so feet and then opened into some echo-filled place where people were laughing and carrying on and he assumed it was a gambling place. He grabbed his buddies and slipped in and down the stairs and sure enough. Gambling. Recognizable faces around a table...officers, etc. And there were awkward glances around the room, some stiff questions from a big Chinese guy who stood at the door, and then the three stokers were escorted back up the stairs and out onto the street.

A few days later, the guy runs into one of the officers he saw, and the officer...some Lt. Commander...quietly took him aside and told him that it was in his best interest to forget about what he saw that night.

Nothing strange in any of this, as it's all basically the same stuff I've heard time and time again from other sources. And all this comes a few months after my last bit of research into this whole story. And the guy I met was just another random encounter. And it was all general small talk, e.g. "What you do? Oh really...? Lemmie tell you something I saw way back..."

I think since this forum is the main reason I come here it should have its on webpage. What do you think KK?

But then im just lazy and its so hard to look back almost 90 pages to find stuff ugh. I think we should have a viewing party for Kublas documentary since I was bummed when I did not see it in the antimatter program. Just out of curiosity was it set for a theme that they still have?

The Antimatter thing is my own damned fault. This is the consequence of missing one deadline too many, and taxing the patience of very patient people. I owe them a debt of gratitude for (at least) keeping me motivated through some rough nights editing down the final cut.

So...props to T. E. for his support. And for his continued support as well. Maybe next year...

As for the web page suggestion, the thought had crossed my mind. The truth is that UER has been an excellent resource, as well as a community, and I have benefited from my membership with the site. It is through UER that I met Tanuki, and then JPeterman and A. Lien. As a crew, we've explored a number of very interesting places. We've hosted members from far away cities, and managed to provide some entertaining adventures during their stays.

Avatar-X is a great guy, despite his predilection for anthropomorphic adventure/play. The first time we met, I watched him suck back a plate of angle-hair pasta with smoked chicken in about 20 seconds, and then laughed heartily as he realized the entire meal had been served piping hot, and that the inner membranes of his mouth were beginning to blister from severe burns.

Good times...good times...

I almost met Jester, but he turned into a newt and slipped under a rock before we had a chance to connect. Last I heard, he was performing as a mime-ninja in downtown Vancouver to less-than-appreciative audiences.

I've met Team Leader, a fine and righteous fellow, and if you can handle earth-churning mood swings, he's a great drinking companion, so long as he's locked in a cage, and you've got the only key.

There are others as well, and just as many stories, just as many adventures.

What I enjoy most about the continuation of this thread, and the contributions to it made by new members, is that it extends the urban legend into further and further reaches. For people visiting Victoria for the first time, and who grow bored of the tedious and dull and generally vapid and un-ending stream of tourist kitsch of mainstream McVictorialand™, this thread offers as a visitor guide something different: off-the-beaten-path, fulfilling adventure in a fascinating Canadian city.

The thread itself has become its own source of exploration, and one can wander through the various tangents for days, reading and re-reading and writing and who too take the story into ever more personal accounts of tunnel exploration.

Under the Garden City belongs on UER. Besides, there are only so many login names/pass words I can remember. One more will surely deplete my remaining memory.

We are nearing the anniversary of last years meet, and the rainy season is soon to be in full swing. Is anyone interested in another meet? Perhaps a drain? KK's film? General gossip?
