Charles Camsell - Edmonton

No this isn't another 'OMGZ I FOUND TEH SECRET HOSPITALSZZ' thread

I just wanted to post some research that I have done with this place.

It was originally built as a hospital for soilders returning from WWII but was torn down and rebuilt into the building that is standing today. (I have the blueprints for the old building, and had only realized this after I paid for them - oh well they look cool)

When the building was rebuilt it was set up primarily as an "Indian' hospital dealing with Natives with various afflictions from all over the North and West parts of Canada.

The physc wing was on the third floor, and this is where 'electro shock therapy' as well as various other inhumane treatment occurred, including the sterilization of those deemed unfit to breed (eugenics) - However after pouring over extensive amounts of hospital records and history books, i can neither confirm nor deny this. The mention of this is only made in one Ghosts of Alberta/Edmonton book, and I speculate was done to make the place seem creepy.

When the hospital eventually shut down, it was done because of a new hospital being built near by and a lack of funding - not aesthetes as we are lead to think.

The one recorded death (other than hospital related incidents) was of a worker falling off the roof.

There was a fire on the upper floor after it had been closed down.

At one point after closing much equipment was left around. However now the hospital is nothing more than a hollow shell, with all rooms demolished leaving only open floors.

There is another couple of buildings on the grounds, one being a engine room, another being what could have been a residence or childrens wing. They are accessible through underground tunnels.

I have explored this place extensively and on many trips, although it should be noted there is still a possibility of aesbostos contamination. I will post pics of what I have later.

My first few visits I did not have a camera, so the pictures I will post are of post wall demolition.

It is possible it could be either housing, or a private health clinic in the future.

Another update. It has been completely boarded up and the only access would be an approx 2 story climb. The buildings off to the side are still accessible however, and I think one of them contains an underground passage. Its heavily guarded now also with a security force and fast responding Edmonton Police. Oh well at least they let me go with a warning ;)

You might want to do some fact-checking. What sources are you using? Here's a few facts from a great book titled The Camsell Mosaic.

It was originally built as a hospital for soilders returning from WWII but was torn down and rebuilt into the building that is standing today.

Or, maybe it was originally the Jesuit College, built in 1913; which was slowly surrounded by a complex of wood-frame buildings constructed by the American army around 1942. It formally opened as an Indian hospital on August 26, 1946. All the original wooden buildings, followed later by the original brick college, were eventually demolished when the modern Camsell was built (approx 1967).

There was indeed a 'physc' (sic) ward, which I remember as a half-dozen rooms on the fourth floor. However, considering that the Camsell was focused on treating tuberculosis and a primarily native population of patients, I doubt they had much involvement with eugenics or shock therapy.

More accurately, the other outbuildings were a small vehicle garage, the boiler house, and the laundry building (the last two being connected via tunnels to the main hospital).

I'm planning to visit this place, (I can't stop thinking about it since I saw it last week...) looks well boarded up and it is pretty open space, where everybody can see you... anybody managed to get inside lately or is planning to?

Did a little visit, Mr. King does not exaggerate, had a few close calls. Pretty sure I found the underground passage door, right next to the freight elevator, was indeed welded shut.

Yeah the main building is pretty much impossible to get into without scaling at least 2 stories and considering its surround by residential area, to do that in the day would be impossible, and to do it at night, very dangerous

However the engine building and the other one still allows for some nice exploring.

PS: If anyone is in the engine room, be on the lookout for my pipe bag with my 50 dollar glass pipe and my screens

I was there back in May 2007 and several of the floors still had full rooms, hallways, ect. The other floors were all destroyed already, and you could see the outlines of the rooms along the floor. The building was fairly open then and we just walked inside, workers showed-up and we got chased away, then stopped by the Police, it was fun. I was only in Edmonton for a few days and went with a local friend to check it out. The fire damage on the top floor is cool to see.

I know this "subject" had a long thread a while back, just wondering when the last time she was explored was. I took some exterior pics today and am thinking of trying to infiltrate. Any others interested in joining/warning me drop me a line.

I've never explored anything in Edmonton other than construction sites and the odd abandoned house. If I was around you could expect me to come along.
