Aliens, Roswell, and Missile Silos (somewhat pic heavy)

Well, I return from a weekend excursion with a few pictures and sunken hopes. We located 7 of 12 Atlas F missile silos. However, 3 were on private properties with excessive 'No Trespassing' signs. Unfortunately all 4 that we were able to get to, the personnel entrances were locked up tighter than a corset on a manatee, and we failed to bring our climbing harnesses. So, the holes in the ground were off limits. *ahem* epic fail! Nonetheless, it was like a little treasure hunt, looking for the entrances shaped like wedges, at times barely visible, amongst the hills and cacti.

These Atlas F missile silos are identified by the wedge-shaped personnel entrances and usually 2 huge water tanks set back from the highway at least 3 tenths of a mile on unpaved tracks. The silos are a good 17 stories deep into the ground, so there was good reason why we wouldn't go without climbing gear!

1. Site 5, destroyed by explosion in the 1960's
personnel entrance

2. Site 5
Missile hatch doors

3. Site 5

4. Site 5

5. Site 5
down the hatch!

6. Site 5
another hatch, difficult to reach the rungs

7. Site 5
concreted-over doorway

8. Site 10
this site was the site for a some sort of laser show, as the hatch doors were open, but this property was recently purchased and strictly off-limits and razor-wired off

9. Site 10
locked up personnel entry (covered in flying termites, I might add!)

10. Site 11
this was the first site we found

11. Site 11
vandals bent the fence, but the door was still enough to ward off trespassers

12. Site 11
(I had the urge to push him...)

13. Site 12 (btw, this site is for sale via Century 21)
this is the only site we found that could possibly be entered, however, we'd still need climbing gear. damn.

14. Site 12
another hole

15. Site 12

16. Site 12
...assessing the situation...

17. Site 12
...he probably could've fit in there...

18. Site 12
this is what we would've been in for, had we been prepared, I'm angry.

19. Site 12
*salivate*

20. Site 12
missile hatch doors

21. Site 12
And so we leave..forlorn and dejected...luckily, its a short trip to make, and we'll be back soon.

22. And I console myself with a Diet Coke. mmmm...liquid happiness.

Well...it was only our first date, and I didn't want to look like a whore
We forgot our climbing equipment, and judging by what I've seen from the other sites, we didn't want to be stupid and get into some sort of bind. There will be more trips, hopefully soon.

word! you know how hard it is to get the DP at restaurants here in NY?!?! F-in hard!

Cool pics....do you know how much they want for that silo they are selling? You could always go to the real estate office and say you want to buy it...then they have to take you on a tour...its so stupid it HAS to work.

Sweet pictures, I always loved that old cold war stuff. I'm curious about the missile base in Swanton Vermont, off middle road, does anybody know if that one is still abandoned? Or how about the ones near Abilene, Texas? pm me

thanks, I honestly thought about calling the Century 21 phone number on the sign on the gate. I think it would work too. The past couple of silos went for about $400,000. And actually, the people that buy them have fixed them up pretty nicely.

"The Starlite is the first privately funded project that will send messages from the general public into outer space on a high-power laser beam. It uses a newly invented technology, "LMT" or "Light Messaging Technology" that combines powerful visible pulsed YAG and supercharged Infrared lasers to beam through the Earth's atmosphere into deep space with over a thousand watts of peak power."
