Many of them are simply gone now, and there's plenty of evidence of their destruction. It's still such a sad sight to see. For so many, their boats were all they had that were worth anything. A book you may be interested in is Bayou Farewell by Mike Tidwell. It was actually written before the hurricane, but it shows how much of what happened here started long before the hurricane, with the destruction of the wetlands (which should be our primary defense against storm surge). He added an extra afterword after Katrina and Rita came through, adding updates about the places he visited previously, and he really put emphasis on what could be done to help prevent this from happening again.
