I haven't been exploring in a while, so I met up with a few folks on Sunday to explore the beautiful Calanthean Temple.
From the Historic Site sign out front: "Built 1923 by the Court of Calanthe, an early African-American woman's organization. Served as the Court of Calanthe's headquarters for many years as well as housing the offices of Black professionals. Roof Garden at top of building was used for dances, Mardi Gras balls, and other events."
After much discussion over how to get in, we finally managed to find a way that didn't involve slogging through the basement. Of course, the only open door on the "ground level" led to the basement, haha. No easy way in this time.

#6 The majority of the buildings you see down there are abandoned.

#7 A view of downtown

#8 Someone hanging their laundry. This place was full of huge piles of clothes. They were everywhere. You could clothe a couple hundred people with all that was in there. It was amazing. You can see one small pile in #3. This was the only article of clothing that looked like anyone had ever actually worn it or cared for it.

We also went to another building that day, but I haven't resized the photos yet. This one street could keep me occupied for a year! And people wonder why I like Shreveport...

I'm supposed to go to Shreveport in a few weekends. I might try to look that up. Nice work.

You should totally check it out. There are homeless people living there, one of which I've heard goes by the name of Crazy Mike, so be aware of that. You may run into some folks. We didn't see anybody, but the fourth floor was obviously occupied. Two of the guys I was with had been there previously and had run into one guy coming into the building while they were leaving. They'd heard some howling noise upstairs and decided to call it a day. The guy they met informed them that the howling was Crazy Mike and that they should avoid the top floor. So, uh, I guess keep an eye peeled for a crazy howling guy, haha.
Also, if you bring your son with you (it's you that has the son that you explore with, right? Or am I making that up?), he might have a hard time getting in unless the basement's dry. It's not too high a climb, but the few footholds are spaced pretty far apart and my short stubby legs were having a hard time reaching up that far.

Let me know when you're in town and we can go explore a few more buildings on that street if you'd like.

Yes, it is me that has the "youngest Texas UE" that tags along with me most of the time. Crazy Mike huh? yeah, that's probably not something I would want to venture into alone.

I'll let you know when we settle a date for coming out that way. I think we're going to spend the night.
