UE Trip to New Orleans

My wife and I will be flying to New Orleans next month for a UE vacation and I was wondering if anyone had anything specific in mind that we shouldn't miss be it specific locations or streets we should walk down. We will be staying in the French quarter I think (haven't booked a hotel yet) and I don't think we will have a car. Is there much to see around the French quarter or should we get a hotel in another area? I don't expect much in the way of exact locations but if you could just point me to some areas with high concentrations of abandonments I would really appreciate it and I'll be sure to share my photos.

Thanks,
j.

If you are for real then listen to me.
Go to NO, stay near French quarter, go on tours and do touristy things.
Do not attempt any UE anywhere in New Orleans. The place is very dangerous and you'll be puting yourself and your family in great jeopardy for no reason at all...
That's it.

I would be carefull, New Orleons was a getto before the storm, I have was there a few months ago and it is a UE's paradise BUT it is now the murder, drug, rape, and all out crime capital of the world, I think they should abandon the whole city and let Mother Nature reclaim what is her's.

Thanks guys, I will definitely keep that in mind. If it was just me I wouldn't be all that concerned but I wouldn't want to put my wife in danger. Since we have never been to N.O. I'm sure we can find other things to do and still get quite a few interesting photos.

Jesus, guys, you're making New Orleans sound like the most horrendous place in all of existence. Seriously, it's not that bad. Is there crime? Yes. Are there parts of the city you probably shouldn't go to? Yes. But just use common sense like you would in any other big city. If you have a bad feeling about an area, just avoid it. If you drive down a street and there's a gang of menacing-looking guys hanging around, lock your doors. Don't try to UE the Lafitte projects or something like that. But it's not like you're going to get shot for stepping out of the French Quarter. Despite what some may think, NOLA isn't inhabited solely by murderers and rapists. There are NORMAL people living there, and for the most part just about everyone you meet will probably be nice and welcoming (unless you're meeting cops while coming out of an abandonment).

If you decide not to UE NOLA, I think you could still have fun doing the tourist thing while there and UE elsewhere in south LA (the Geodesic Dome in Baton Rouge comes to mind). Please don't be deterred, though. New Orleans is a wonderful city, and you won't find another place like it. It has its problems, some of them admittedly very bad, but so does every other big city in the world. Like I said, use common sense and you should be fine. I have been to New Orleans countless times pre-Katrina and have generally gone once every couple of months post-Katrina, and I have yet to be in a situation where I've feared for my safety.

Non-UE-related: If you want a nice place to stay away from the clamor of the French Quarter, check out hotels in the Garden District and Uptown.

Seeing that you live in Louisiana, I'm more inclined to believe your take on NOLA. (no offense to the rest of you.) I think we are going to end up renting a car and getting out of NOLA as well to see what else is around the area as far as UE. I think were staying in the French Quarter simply because I love historic buildings (not that other areas don't have historic buildings) and I'll end up getting more shots of them than otherwise. So do you have any suggestions in or around NOLA for UE or should I just wing it and trust my instincts when it comes to the shadier parts of the city?

I don't have any specific locations to give you. There were a few old houses I liked outside of New Orleans, but they were washed away by the hurricane.
I've heard the LeBeau Mansion in Arabi (St. Bernard Parish) is interesting. Last I heard it was being renovated. Vectorsnob has a photo of it on his Flickr page, and the comments give a little insight to its current state. http://www.flickr....244/in/set-106526/

I've been into a few houses in NOLA post-Katrina. One was a friend's house and the others were his neighbors'. Although it may seem like a UE paradise, I can't go into them without getting really depressed about it all, so I just kind of stay out. Be prepared for lots of mold and overprotective neighbors (can you blame them, though?).

It's hard to turn around and not see something abandoned. Just trust your instincts, in any part of the city. It's not just thugs to worry about. Neighbors and cops are pretty sensitive about people wandering into others' flood-damaged homes. They're less likely to just turn you loose with a warning (and really, the "Oh! I didn't know I was trespassing. Sorry!" excuse doesn't really fly in most places). So just keep your eyes open. Really, I think you'll be fine if you trust your instincts, use some common sense, and are aware of your surroundings.
