How about makeing the book or directions on copper pages,

It wouldn't be the first time cheap metals were used in a book. The Material Girl did it with Aluminum, for the cover of her book on Quantum Physiques.

Okay...this is getting a tad too (sexually) ironic.

Let us instead consider the story of Gavin. He left home at 14 and 'worked' his way across the country, settling finally in Victoria at the ripe old age of 24. He doesn't 'work' anymore, mainly because he doesn't look anywhere near 14. Or even 18, or 20 or even 24.

He earns a decent living and makes sure his dog (Kettle) and his cat (Erb) eat well and have proper access to their personal necessities.

Funny thing about them street folk: the animal companions are (often) better fed than their owners/managers.

Gavin once dated an older woman who was (allegedly) an initiate into some weird cult. Weird like 'specially designed diets where specific nutrients aligned with apparently sacred knowledge' or some shit. Or 'their formulations of vitamins aligned with sacred crystal transmission' blah blah. Whacko cosmic weirdness.

Gavin told me that this woman, a generally anonymous-looking person, which is to say a 'person of little interest, plain, ordinary, pedestrian, inconsequential...like a frumpy 30-something secretary on a bus' once mentioned something about a grocery market on Fisgard. One of those 'I saw the strangest things today' type episodes in any sort of intimate relationship, usually mentioned post coital.

He told me that she said she saw a startled-looking business man, presumably Chinese (or of Asian origin blah blah blah PC whatever blah), come out from a door that opened to a downward staircase that led into what was, and could only be, Fisgard St.

I don't know why he gave me all this stuff. I mean seriously...who tells a total stranger the most fragmentary moments of intimacy between two desperate people? And as an anecdote. THAT's odd, Brothers and Sisters.

It seemed to her that the staircase went down steeply and that a dimly-lit brick-walled hallway led into darkness which, from her standpoint at street level, seemed to go in one solid direction under Fisgard St.

So I went down to Fisgard St. this afternoon. It was lovely and sunny and bustling and so forth. I went into every grocery store/vegetable market and maybe I saw something that might corroborate his version of her story. A doorway that seems at odd angles with the rest of the architecture. An odd feeling of 'the door to nowhere' common when one is suspicious and/or curious of oddly-angled doors/entrances (or exits, etc.). Common also when one is a wee bit stoned.

And then I remembered another story told by another guy about something something something...fire something threats. Something about a gambling thing and a fire.

And as it happens, the location of one story is directly across the street from the weirdly-angled doorway/entrance (or exit, etc.). So I'm thinking that maybe there's something under the street that leads from one side to another.

Which seems more plausible than a long tunnel running all the way up Fisgard. Instead of a spine, there is a set of ribs (or 'a' rib), with each end connecting a property directly in front of another. Maybe adjacent properties have connecting doorways at basement level, but essentially it's a set of parallel passageways connecting one building to its 'twin' across the street.

Gavin said he lost contact with the vegetable worshipping cult non-personality person shortly after she revealed the story of the startled-looking Chinese businessman. Or 'person of Asian blah blah.

I asked him why he gave up a strange yet memorable and very personal memory to me, and he said it was because Kettle let me scratch her snout.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Hello, all. I'm new to this forum, and urban infiltration all-together. But recently I have become interested in the many rumors concerning the tunnel networks beneath Victoria. I've heard snippets of things as far back as grade school (concerning escape tunnels, opium dens, and brothels beneath old Chinatown.) And as I've lived in Victoria my whole life I've come to notice all the old architecture and Freemason heritage. These curiosities have culminated and I'm really looking for some solid facts now. I would love to begin exploring some of these places and if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Victoria is a beautiful city, but it's the seedy underground that excites me the most.

You already know the right direction, yes you do...

Down down down... Maybe start with the Hall of Wonders to, um, get your feet wet.

Feel free to share any stories you have heard. There is no safer more friendly place than this thread, none, nowhere in the whole world. How do you feel about the whole 'spider thing'?

Hey djokibi. Glad to have you on board. The best thing to do is start following up on every little rumour or myth you've heard. Start asking people in general just everywhere you go about what they know of the tunnels in Victoria. Write down any leads you have and check them out later. You will find some of the stories you've heard are absolutely true, others...absolutely false, and some....are things that have gotten blown out of proportion or been elaborated on (but are still really neat)

The latter is often the most likely.

Post what you feel is alright to be publically known and keep the rest secret. Often common sense and judgement come into play here. (I'm probably telling you things you already know)

On another note.
Maybe, hopefully, this summer we could start up the GCG meets again.

JP

[Oh and one more thing. Make sure not to confuse urban masturbation with urban exploration. Once I confused the two...]

Thanks for the warm welcome. If someone would be so kind as to send me some details on the location of the "Hall of Wonders," I'd love to check it out in the near future. I have a few friends who are also interested in UE, so I'll be sure to point them to this forum, soon.

PLEASE DON'T POST EXACT LOCATIONS!

Posting exact location isn't only against forum rules, it is against them for a very good reason. The carelessness of some explorers has already got the best entrance to the Burrow sealed up.

If lots of people start frequenting the Hall of Wonders and being noisy and stupid, residents will complain, and the place will be made considerably less accessible. I like the fact that there is a really easy drain in Victoria, because then I can take people there who are interested in drains but nervous about doing anything too difficult.

It is really easy to find out where the Hall of Wonders is. All you have to do is go to the library, or spend a bit of time on Google. But most people are too stupid/lazy to do this, hence them constantly asking for the exact location. I think it's a really good filter to make people actually do a bit of work to find the place. That way they will gain a bit of respect for the place.

If you want to tell someone where a location is, please actually take them there. It's both much more social and you can help impress on the new person that they should respect the place.

Us UE folks in Victoria are pretty approachable, we accept just about anyone. Hell, we even tolerate KK. If you want to meet up for a coffee or beer, or come to our next meet, I'm sure someone will show you something cool.

We aren't at all elitist, but we are all busy people, so if you take the time to do a bit of research on your own and actually contribute something, we are much more likely to fit you into our schedule.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I understand that we don't want these locations to be shut down, so it's important to keep location details as vague as possible. I'll do a bit of inquiring myself, and plan to check out the "Hall of Wonders" as soon as it gets a bit nicer out. Thanks again.

Hi, I'm brand new here and just felt like adding some info to the topic. I don't know if its been mentioned, but I'm too lazy to go back and search all the pages...

I went on a ghost tour of Market Square a few weeks ago, and the guide took us into an empty store in the basement of the center of the square. The back wall was exposed and was built of stone and cement and had a 4 by 7 foot door-way cemented shut. He said it was filled in due to water damage and when the square was redone in the '70s. Apparently it used to lead from the Market (once a really bad area) to their supply of liquor and opium, but now they are completely filled in with gravel, mud, cement and other crap.

The only tunnel still in existance runs from a well established... "Unionized Club" to Johnson street, where there used to be two solid blocks of bars, brothels, and the like.

Hope that helped?

Not true. This is a misrepresentation of fact. It is false.

While some of these are indeed filled in, many others are not. The city's official position is that all these spaces/tunnels are known/well known, and have been back-filled. I have it on record from a city operations manager that there are areas/tunnels beneath the city that are a) not filled in, and b) unknown. In other words, there are tunnels/spaces beneath the city that are part of some formal structure that is not part of current city records/schemata. This person told me that he has seen/been inside spaces/tunnels that are not on his charts, and he acknowledged that, as an old(er) city, there are things that went on before Official Victoria started keeping records of such things.

But yeah...your info helped. Thanks. What else do you have?

Well, thats interesting. Now I'm determined to find them. I'm going downtown today to look in the BC and Victoria archives today, and take some pictures in the market square area. I don't know a whole bunch about the tunnels. I know of a few murders that took place on Johnson in the 1800s if anyone wants to know about them.

Has anyone ever been underneath the Crystal Garden? I had a sleepover there with guides a really long time ago; snuck out of the ballroom and went into the basement. Not a whole lot down there... the old cement walls of the pool and water pumps are still there, and the usual furnaces, spiders, etc. Still was kind of cool.

Well... only because you asked me so politely.

In 1898, prostitute Belle Adams and her pimp Charlie Kincaide came over from Seattle. He told her all of the usual "We're gonna spend the rest of our lives together", etc, and they set up business in the Empire Hotel on Johnson. Everyone was used to yelling coming from their room, and things being thrown. One night, Belle was across the street working, when she heard another girl say that Charlie was going to take someother girl away, what he'd been promising Belle. So she ran across to the hotel room only to find Charlie shaving. She started yelling at him, and an argument ensued. People report hearing items hitting the wall, a blood curdling scream, then silence.

When Charlie was fighting with Belle, he backed her into the washroom, against the sink. Groping for some sort of self-defense, she found his straight razor and slashed at him. She cut his throat from ear to ear; his head severed almost half off. Charlie staggered down the stairs before collapsing in the middle of the road. Belle followed, weeping hysterically and threw herself down on his quivering, life-less body, begging for forgiveness and for him to return. She had to be dragged off of his body when the police arrived. She was sentenced to 5 years in the Kingston Pennetentary for women, and died shortly after release. People working in the hotel (now offices) have reported hearing yelling, and a woman's high-pitched cackle. People have also had books and boxes thrown at them, and turned to see a woman in a long dress disappearing down the stairs.
