Interesting pictures. they really help shed some light on what a lot of major cities consider a big problem. What most of these people need isn't money, it's therapy and job training. Can you imagine the self esteem of some of these people? there has to be ways to help them, and I understand that a lot of them wouldn't want help, or would even refuse it. But I'm sure they could still be helped somehow.

On an odd side note,
Noah Vale and I were checkin' out an old bridge and ran into a guy named "Super Dave". He got the nickname because he got beat up and stabbed several times but didn't die. He was too happy to show us the scars. ANYhow, he noticed one of my pen lights I use for backup in my pocket and was really interested in it. I got like a hundred of them from a Mary Kay show I worked and gave it to him. It just never ocurred to me but makes sense that homeless people need to see in the dark a lot more than most other people and flashlights were a big commodity for them. I've since given away all of mine to people I've run in to in old buildings and under bridges.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

Heh!
I sure wish I'd kept one of 'em. I might not have stumbled all over that basement in the dark today. I ALWAYS bring spares....well usually... If I were alone, I'd probably still be stumblin' around in that huge mofo lookin' for the stairs. Check out CN in his newly found hard hat. Doesn't he look important?

we should take him and his disguise with us everywhere

I noticed several passersby AND the crew across the street totally paid no attention to us today

now if we can just teach CN enough Spanish...

I'm sure not going to get into an argument whether these people are poor, helpless victims of society or not. I think this is a great set of photographs. I wanted to do this too but never had the nerve. Thanks for these.

I think I may have mentioned this somewhere before, but, yeah, homeless people tend to be lacking easy access to quite a few things that we generally take for granted, like light, and food, and stuff. Not surprising, hunh?

Since we are some of the only people from society as a whole that really enters into their world, sometimes it's nice to leave a little something. You can easily make up a few zip lock bags that would greatly improve the quality of life for someone who sleeps on a damp mattress.

Some ideas for things you can leave which will truly help people:

  • Whenever you stay at a hotel, grab all of the soaps and shampoos (and a couple of hand towels)
  • When you open a container of band aids, throw a couple in
  • Any first aid items (hydrogen peroxide, neosporin, antiseptic wipes, etc)
  • Obviously, ready-to-eat, pre-packaged food
  • Plastic spoons, forks, knives (or silverware if possible)
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Travel sewing kits
  • pocket knives
  • BOOKS
  • Shoelaces
  • Hand sanitizer
Shit like that. You get the idea.

Also, you can leave some information about how to get help, if they want it. Two (U.S.) resources that I like are STANDUP FOR KIDS and Project Safe Place.

Good list!
I spent close to a year on the street but not completely severed from the general population as many of truly homeless people have become and the flashlight thing was an eye opener. ( no pun intended.) We all think of the obvious stuff like food and shelter but the other things you listed are essential and not only inexpensive but can really improve someones quality of life. I really like the idea of a small, easy to carry first aid kit.
I've found that many homeless are willing to share vital information about abandonments if you ask them respectfully. It is, after all, their domain we're visiting.

on one hand its easy to laugh at some of these crazy guys, and I havent seen any kids in the canyon lately but having done volunteer work for the Austin St Shelter I can tell you they are there

wtf, 2X doing volunteer work??? yep been there done that too folks

one little girl with her mommy and sister came through the chow line getting sandwiches and fried chicken (donated by Churches Chicken) and there was this big plate with a variety of cookies (donated by Kroger or somebody)

the little girl about 7-8yrs old looked at the cookies and then looked at mommy to ask: "is it Ok if I take one of those"

man, I thought for sure I was going to lose it right there, a very very humbling experience I will never forget

It really is pathetic how this country will go out of its means to help other countries, yet overlook those who need help right here in America. Yet they will go out of their way to 'sweep it clean' and keep up the indefatigable image of pride. Nice eye opening set you guys, I only wish more people would get out of their comfort zones and see what goes on while they're watching their plasma t.v.s and eating Sunday brunch.

While I agree with what you're saying here, what are we suppose to do? Hand them the money so they can go buy more crack instead of cleaning up the city? This can go both ways. Yes, our country spends a lot of money helping other countries, but if you look around you, America IS the land of opportunity, which is why so many people come here from other countries. While I feel sorry for some of these people, and have given homeless a dollar or two here and there, many of them choose to not do what it takes to get out of their current position. Just check out Mr. Crack smoker up there in one of the pictures. I know I'd rather buy him some more crack, then clean some streets.
