Has any one been in the old sugar mill in Sugarland Texas, it was built around 1909, and is now closed? And by the way I am new here, how is every one?

A sugar mill in a town called Sugar Land... whoda' thunk? I don't think anyone here knows what you are specifically referring to. Is this an Imperial Sugar co. building? How did you hear about it? Why don't you go explore it and then let us know how it went?

I have not been in it yet, the old building is red brick built 1909, the sugar plant is about 30+ acres with many building on the property. It sits on HWY 90 west of the 59 FWY east of HWY 6, with Oyster creek bordering the east side of the property. ( look at mapquest, type stafford TX 77477 click on the aeriel image fallow HWY 90 west past 59 to the brown creek (Oyster creek) center and zoom in to see the lay out of the plant ). The plant was closed around 2003 I think the only way in is crossing the creek, every thing else is fenced in.

Looks like a good one though. I would however be very careful trying to enter that one. Alarms, fences, guards, the like since it hasn't been closed all that long.

I have to admit I would love to see this diabetic nightmare. I thought you were talking about something considerably smaller than this. While I don't want to discourage you any, I would have to agree with the rat in that if this is your first UE attempt you will want to be cautious. This sugar company closed the doors to this mill but they still have their headquarters in town and are by no means out of business.

Yep, I would bet my rats ass that they still have a presence there in some form or another. Hard to tell without scoping it closely for a while.

I think in limited time Ive been here on UER, Ive seen about 90% of the postings like this turn out to be 100% troll if not 99.44% pure b.s.

Seriously if you had any real intention of "going in" why would you post a public notice asking for info? hoping maybe some employee at Imperial Sugar will find this via Google? (reminds me of the bblonghorn sagas) Maybe YOU are an employee...

Anyway, now if you dont explore it and get the pics all your friends here will think youre a sissy (or trolling)

This is not my first, but for shear size this would be my biggest, next to the Rice Hotel in down town Houston before it's restoration, it is 15 stories high and was built in 1914 I also spend time researching and finding lost lumber mills and homesteads up in the Texas National Forests. The sugar mill still has power to some buildings other arias are over grown and starting to show their age. The only thing that interests me about the sugar mill is it's history and older machinery in the 1909 structure. Some of you will hate me for this BUT, when I go into abandoned hotels, houses, even ships (when I say ships I do not mean museums, but wreaked, and abandoned vessels like the S.S. Selma in Galveston)I look for things "of interest" historic and or valuable. You would be amazed what goes down drains and stops in the "p" trap or in the sumpt in the basement, what falls out of pockets when they are left out hanging on the close line 80 or more years ago, I have over 200 mercury dimes made of silver as old as 1919, 50+ Buffalo nichols of the 1930s and 20s, walking liberty half dollars, china tie cups a meet grinder from the 1890s and so on, it is about holding on to history, touching something that was near valueless 50, 70, 100+ years ago, now only to be worth triple or more. I don't sell any of it, just display it, value it for histories sake.

You have to know that you are going to be thrashed unmercifully for what you've said. Maybe this is the oldest debate among explorers. And, I suspect that a lot of folks who swear on the grave of their childhood pet that they would NEVER take anything, all be damned, still take a token item from time to time when no one is looking. I have an old tariffs book from the 1920's that was about to be destroyed. I have an old school bell that I retrieved from the rubble of what was left of an old school that I admired, but I suspect that what will get you the most scathed over your post is the fact that you basically said that is the reason you go. Personally, I'd never fault anyone for picking up an old dime or nickel. But I do question taking plumbing apart to get a better look. Do you tear out the walls to get to the plumbing? Finding a trinket is not the same as treasure hunting.
Explore for the reasons you mentioned... the history, things of interest, machinery, sights and sounds that you can see no where else. Then leave it intact for the next explorer to enjoy also. I'm betting this will be the nicest post you'll see on this topic from here on out.

I don't tare down walls or anything like that LOL!! unfortunately most of the damage is done before I ever find the sights, But if I do find a old hotel or house (when I say old I mean older that 30 years) and it has not been remodeled and up dated I do get excited. If the structure is 80 years old than anything that may be found in it could be as old as 80 years old, but if it was renovated 20 years ago new plumbing and all than any thing found in it will most likely be only 20 years old. "p"traps simply unscrew by hand, old sumps have doors so they can be cleaned if needed. If the hotel was near a body of water, lake, creek, or river than sometimes the older buildings plumbing dumped right into the water. It is rumored, a rummer I believe, that the Rice hotel in Houston did just that, I have a buddy that has silverware (I do mean silver) and some saucers with the big "R" for Rice on them he clames to have found the old water discharge from the hotel in the Buffalo Bayou. I have herd of people finding not only the Rice but other hotel artifacts in the bayou, I have not seen it YET but I am looking. this summer I am planing another trip to the SS Selma, the ship was built in 1919 and was damaged in 1922. It was then decommissioned and sank off of Pelican Island in shallow water. It is not the safest place to poke around in, it is 2/3s submerged, and made of 88 year old concrete ( yes a concrete ship 420 feet long 54 feet wide 7500 tons ). The supper structure is completely gone, but with a snorkel you can go down into the hull. I have seen what is left of the crew quarters not much, I plan to finally penetrate into the boiler room and engineering to see the three cylinder steam engine with compressed air, if passable. The ship is in very bade shape and the upper deck is beginning to collapse, I will be takeing no trinkets, it is a state historical landmark and an archeological landmark, a peace of history saved from spray pant!!
