| | | I ran into X today (or maybe it was Y) and she told me that Y (or X?) had to leave town after receiving some rather bad news. I didn't get into details with her, but she said he won't be coming back soon. I had to work hard to remind her of the conversation we'd had weeks earlier, but when the Light came back on, she smiled and nodded and said, "Yeah, I remember you. Tunnels, right?" So we stopped for a coffee and I bought her an espresso-chocolate chip muffin and we talked about the tattoo on the back of her hand, and she told me about living on a reserve as a kid, and what that meant to her, and why she won't go back no matter what, and then she kinda got a bit weepy but she shrugged and said she's been through worse and after a bit of meandering through various distractions (e.g. kids who panhandle for beer money) and the Mayor's parking spot outside City Hall and some crazy dude who pulled a gun on her over Christmas who failed to execute his threat and then we settled on the tunnel thing. "One good earthquake and half of downtown would sink into the ground. The tunnel on Fisgard is like a spine running lengthwise from Store to Government, and a good shake would cave the whole thing in. That's why the city doesn't want people to know what's under there." I asked where the door to this place is, but she wouldn't tell me. "Some of the folks on the street need that place for shelter, and the guy who owns the business where the entrance is is sympathetic to some of us. His family was persecuted back when the government started charging the head tax." But she did offer one clue: "If you follow the serpent, it will lead you to where you want to go"

| | | From what I've seen, the Humpback pipe is not that big, not even three feet in circumference. I almost suggested you try some playgrounds, those with the plastic pipe crawl toy things. Could be interesting experimental acoustics, if not the depth of what you seek. My earlier comment was related to the Bowker Creek drain. It's roughly ten wide, by seven high. In summer it's likely bone dry. Otherwise, at this time of year, I don't know? Perhaps highway tunnels in the wee hours. Although even then, you may only have a short time before the silence is interupted. Good luck, I can relate to your interest.

LMAO! I wouldn't even play cards in those bad boys. That's where Tanuki stores his cryogenically preserved DNA. After Armageddon he will then repopulate the planet, (A total UE playground) with Tanukians. Tanuki Nation awaits. Only sacrificed re-incarnated zombie explorers, like the new Hypno Toad will share the land. (Great work btw.) Oh yeah, and K.K, and anyone else willing to be sacrificed. Here's to a great year of exploring, and what ever else you seek.

Tanukians? Killer shit, Brother. Killer. As for the sacrifice stuff...I'll do the blood-letting, thanks. Peterman is past his prime (rib), so I'll have to look for another willing victim. Canadian Trencher comes to mind, but we'll see.

| | | Radar domes are awesome for playing inside! A few years ago all the little airports were giving away their old ones and some friends and I got one. It was 16 feet across, a white fibreglass sphere. The acoustics were crazy, it sounded like you were playing with heavy distortion and extremely loud, but only if you were standing in the middle, otherwise the sound was completely deadened. Surekill, are you sure about that with carbon monoxide? I would think that given the ideal gas law and all that, CO would change in density the same as the rest of the air. It's about the same density as air (CO is slightly lighter, but not significantly), so it won't particularly sink, but it can collect in enclosed spaces. Carbon dioxide will, however, sink. The main problem I can see with atmosphere quality in winter drains is that the higher water table means that the sewers back up more and overflow into our combined sewage system. Given the high volume of water flow it's unlikely that it will actually hang around to produce any deadly gasses, but it can smell unpleasant. Of course, there are also those deadly waterfalls that would wash you away to your doom... Corvus, have you tried the Galloping Goose underpass? Also, can you play bagpipes? I have this fantasy of Scottish war tunes coming up through the sewers all over Victoria. I just watched a movie about tanukis taking over the world. It's called Pom Poko.
