I had a summer job from 1973 on, as a bus driver for BC Hydro. In those days we did the sightseeing tours around town. Part of our training included a visit to the basement of the Empress hotel. I recall seeing what appeared to be bricked in openings in the basement

I also seem to remember there was a public bathroom on the other side of the street from the Empress. On the corner where the old Esso station and Tilden Rent a Car was (Now Milestones). I remember the public bathroom was below street level and was told that there were two tunnels leading from the bathroom. One to the Empress, and the other went towards the Union Club.

Gotcha. Rumour has it that the Union Club tunnel...or a Union Club tunnel...went straight up to the Strathcona Hotel. Back in the day, the hotel was a bordello (a tunnel to a bordello) and members (SOMEBODY SPANK ME) of the club would sneak past their wives for a bit of the old In Out/In Out, all underground, of course.

Various city workers...now retired...have told me personally of a tunnel that was uncovered circa 1950/60's, when the City decided to bury power/phone lines. Brick walls, reinforced ceiling...the works.

If there's a tunnel went from the Empress to the Union, it's news to me. But I do recall hearing something about a tunnel that went off the Empress away from the Parliament Building...in other words, the opposite direction of whatever previous story I'd heard um...previously.

I've also heard of some kind of underground space complete wit boarded-over store-front windows, or barred windows, and that the area is basically an underground city street that's been forgotten.

Anyhoo. Thanks for the info. What else ya got?

A while back I got real curious about an alleged tunnel from the Empress to the Union Club. Got my nose in the door, and more, looked around a bit, brief as it was. The older 'informed' people I talked to said there was no tunnel to the Empress, and the Union Club is built on bedrock.

Do I believe these noble old chumps? Not for a New York minute. There's lotsa ways to cut bedrock, if it even exists there. And the Empress is built on sludge and dead clams, that's a well known fact.

Actually, that bridge is now the causeway, or more specifically, Government St.

I'm not sure about the building, but i think church hill (where it is looking from) is my neighborhood. Where the law courts are today, there used to be a church i think before the current Christ Church Cathedral was built. i believe the old burying grounds were already in use though.

Indeed. The old cemetary is called The Dead Zone, and is rumoured to have a false grave marker that opens to reveal (you guessed it) an underground passageway.

Hi there. I've sort of been lurking for awhile, though I did make a couple posts back in the Page 20-somethings. I'm a Victoria resident and UE enthusiast, and I was going to go exploring through all the tunnels I had heard about, but then, well... didn't. I'm a bit lazy. But recently I've been thinking I'd like to give it another try. So now I'm here... trying not to troll again. Ahem, anyway...

From what I know, the boarded up underground city street is at the same level as the main part of Market Square, just Downtown. It was the original Johnson Street area, but they just kind of paved over it, and now Johnson Street is slowly sinking. Apparently the area below looks really trippy because it's almost exactly like the street above, only with a concrete sky.

Now, my girlfriend works in Green Cuisine, and apparently the tunnels back there are far-reaching and very, very creepy. And I mean the kind of creepy where every single employee has their stories about the one and only day they closed alone before they started insisting that others be there. Anywho, I'm thinking some time when she's closing, we'll muster up some courage and go back there, see if we can't get into the former streets.

Man, am I ever long-winded...

I have been many a time to dead zone, and I strongly doubt there are any false headstones or secret levers attached to any headstones. That entire "park" used to be a graveyard before they moved all those unsightly headstones to one side and paved a path through. But that doesn't change the fact that under that park are bodies. Lots and lots of bodies. I can't imagine any tunnels being in there, unless there used to be a structure somewhere on the graveyard's premises, with tunnels beneath.

As for the church right next to Deadzone, you can get down below it, but that's as far as it goes. It doesn't branch off to anywhere else. I don't know if anyone on this site thought you could get around by going under the church, but someone I spoke to recently thought you could, so I figured I'd squelch idea that right now.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and I'll try and check back more often and start going out there, myself. See you underground.

Çe magnifique. Or whatever. I failed grade 5 French. Twice.

Your story is compelling. The Market Square area is indeed a point of great interest, and I'd be very much um...interested...in speaking with your gang. If there's a way to bring me along, I'd greatly appreciate it.

<cough>make it worth your while, etc<cough>

As for the fabled Dead Zone, yeah...that one's a bit of a stretch. The thing of it is that it's a tangent of the Main Narrative, as it were, that's been around for almost as long as the original rumour. Can't exactly pinpoint the original source of THIS bit, but it tends to come up from time to time, and from various persons, one of whom is closely connected to a community that has, it is alleged, direct and personal access to The Larger System.

I'm deliberately vague on this point, mainly because this community will not submit to closer scrutiny/investigation viz. a viz. Tunnels in Victoria™. That aside, the person who first told me the Dead Zone story maintains that it is indeed the real deal.

So who knows?

Thanks for the input, Shadowcaster. PM me if you're interested in hooking up to discuss this personally.

My theory about the Old Burying Ground (or Dead Zone) underground rumor is this: as with many rumours, this one started with a grain of truth. I think that perhaps there IS a drain system that goes under a cemetary, that might even have an opening fashioned like a grave; but that it is in another cemetary and the two have been conflated through the grapevine. Point of interest: OBG has around 1200 bodies ensconced in the earth... doesn't necessarily rule out a tunnel, but makes it less likely, and frankly, EEEEEEEKKKKKK!!!

OBG indeed, that is the Dead Zone and has been known as such for a long time by old school locals. As far as tunnels are concerned, perhaps the basement/subbasement/catacombs of the church would be a good place to look first. However, be very careful, you never know what you might find...

Oh man, I should change my name to King Lurker!
Nothing new to add but I'd just like to tell a bit about myself.
I first heard about the tunnels from my Mom, who had a much older friend that told stories about playing in them (Chinatown) as a child. Fast forward to the mid 80's and hanging out with a few 'cool kids' who told stories about Ninja's and opium dens... The 'Harbinger Ave. coffee shop' (use a thesaurus) apparently had an entrance nearby...
Anyway, I was always intrigued, loved the old part of town.
Fast forward to about 6 years ago and through work, I actually got to go into a basement in a shop very near the corner of Fisgard and Govt. to do some wiring.
I saw pretty much what the pictures in A. Lien's post http://www.uer.ca/...=19236&currpage=56 showed.
I had all the tools with me to pop a hole here or there but I was working and, well, there was only one person (me) who could've done it!
A few years before that I had the opportunity to work closely with the gutting of a building opposite the Opus art store - that K Cab home base was below. It had the closets that opened into the adjacent room, supposedly so the women of the night could escape (I think there have been a few writeups on the building?) and alot of chinese writing (1900 era graffiti) on the wall. Try as I might, and this place was probably as close to having all access to below C Town, I couldn't find an opening to anything.
A buddy of mine who worked building the 'new; Eatons centre told me about numerous bricked up 'doorways' when it was just an open pit.
Ever gone on one of those little harbour tugs? They go right under the bridge(s) , kinda cool.

I really take my hat off to what Kubla, J. Peterman, A. Lien and Tanuki are doing. If I had 3 less kids and was 10 years younger I'd be right with you guys.
I remember almost 20 years ago being drunk outside Merlins with my super big mullet stylee and pointy shoes trying to explain to my buddies about the wall in front of us...

I stumbled across Ninjalicious' site about 5-6 years ago and had no idea that there was this widespread interest in urban exploring. We're lucky enough to be in an incredible city for it. Thanks for a crazy good thread!
You guys ever find yourselves staring at all the big holes being excavated on the Y lots looking for tunnels??? The one next to the Strath has just started.
Right now I'm only able to do some social engineering but think about all the possible shop owners, ex-city workers and older folks who have a wealth of knowledge...
