Ok, Ok, Speculation, Speculation.

I've been into one of the many tunnels in victoria. Underneath a marked manhole there is a room about the size of large walk in closet. Getting down into said room is tough because of how narrow the entrance is and how dodgy the "ladder" is. Anyway, in this room there is a tunnel to the right of the ladder, I hope you have strong thighs because at this point its pure crouching and duck walking. The tunnel is approx. 4 foot tall and just as wide, it is circular and all built of what looks like very old red brick. Continue down this tunnel for a hundred metres or so and you are in another room where you can stand up, this room also has a ladder that leads to a manhole, but is too heavy to open from the inside out. Now i feel obligated to mention that while it feels great to stand after crouching for so long, you are standing in about 2 feet of water, its muddy, however with no sign of sewage. This room leads to another tunnel of the same sort that takes a 90 degree left turn from the course of the initial tunnel. Crouching again, after about 3 metres of walking you are out of the water and into very soft sinking mud. Carry on down this tunnel for as long as you like and you will know more than i do, for my legs felt like they were catching fire and i was out of breath. Howver about 70 metres into the second section there is a large hole in the side of the tunnel that exposes a pseudo-river running under the tunnel.

Anyway, I have been working for years to try and gain access to the alleged tunnels under the city. For the sake of good taste i have not revealed the exact location of the entrance i mentioned. If you are driven enough and curious enough, then e-mail me [email protected] I will be happy to trade information.

Jonathon I have walked those exact steps (or crouched for that exact distance down there) and turned back at the same spot because my legs could take no more punishment.

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=24152

I'm just curious. How did you find out about this tunnel?

Unfortunetly this is not the downtown tunnel that I at first thought it was. It is just a simple storm drain which epties out under the Johnson Street Bridge. Watch out for razor blades and syringes.

I am curious though, where it leads for I was walking away from the bridge.

Well from where you entered it goes up straight then left then left again and empties through that big-ish pipe which is exposed on the other side of the bridge.

How did I find out about it? One word, Junkies. It was with little difficulty to identify which exact manhole it was considering it is spray painted lime green.

The river which passes under it is just another pipe that empties out beside the Johnson st bridge. I beleive it just comes to another manhole junction after that and from there it is sealed.

As I understand it, other contributors to this thread have actually been inside this 'tunnel,' and have filed various reports concerning such things as hypodermic syringes found stuck to the sides of these 'tunnel' walls, which would indicate, to me at least, that someone was actually inside shooting...cuz the water level rarely gets high enough in these 'tunnels' to conveniently place a syringe into a wall etc. etc. etc...bad syntax and I'm losing my point here...

...where was I? Right...and the point (bad pun, sorry) is that someone would have had to actually jab the hypo into the wall, so again...someone accessed this 'tunnel' and shot up and then disposed of their equipment in such a manner as to have it stay in place for an extended period of time.

But who cares? This 'tunnel' lost its interest for me long ago. I'm more interested in the tunnel (note lack of quotation marks) under Fisgard, the one reported earlier in this thread and then corroborated by a shop owner AND by some strung-out meth head and various others. Oh yeah...a man of God told me something about it as well...and something tells me that lying or embellishing or fabricating truths isn't part of his job description.

I'm also interested in the tunnel under Store St, as mentioned (again) earlier in this thread. J Peterman and A Lien were there with me when the guy volunteered his information. It's there as sure as I'm typing these words.

Just as the Fisgard tunnel is there.

No. We stood there looking at the thing in full-spectrum astonishment. I kept thinking: who the fuck is so brilliantly stupid as to do something like this? Who could it possibly be? A certified moron? A credible dumb-fuck? A mentally defective shit-for-brains? Who...? WHO?

It was the guy who read Jenny remembers.

Or someone who reads Monday magazine and thought it would be cool to explore based on RC's book.

Or it was a demonic force that pushed its way out after many a decade trapped in an unloved stubby labatts bottle.

When you say THE GUY I hope you aren't referring back to TL, because there is no way it was him. That boy has (moderately) too many brains.

Awesome maps, thanks, let us know if you are in town. If you promise to leave the bolt cutters and that Bremmel thing at home, we'll show you a location or two. We generally explore without weapons of mass deconstruction here :)

'Cept for recently when we thought about hot wiring a cement truck to take out a gate with barb wire icing, lol. Bandits, yah, draining bandits we was.

Great caper all, for our next gig I'm stoked to try J-Town...

I've lived in Victoria my whole life, and heard about the tunnels when I was young teenager (about 20 years ago). I was walking near the Garrick's Head pub and a street girl came up to me and asked frantically if I knew how to get into the tunnels. It seems her friends had been living down there and the city had just poured asphalt over the entrance they used in Bastion Square. At first, I was a skeptical about this girl's story because she was acting pretty crazy, but the word "tunnel" had be hooked. She led me to where a fresh circle of asphalt had been laid. This spot is still visible today behind the parkade. This girl told me of tunnels leading all over downtown from this spot, and that she hoped here friends would be able to find another way out. I don't know if she ever found her friends, but I've been thinking about those tunnels ever since.

Soon after I went through the tunnel from the Legislature to the Douglas Building. It looked too much like an ordinary hallway, so I stole the light bulbs as I went (I think there were only two) to make it look spookier. Relatives that work in the leg confirm that this tunnel is used primarily as an escape route for politicians who want to avoid the press when leaving the legislature. To get in, I simply walked in a side door of the legislature that was propped open, walked down past Hansard (transcription department), and through the unlocked door. I can only assume people thought I was visiting a parent that worked down there, because I passed several people and no one said a word to me.

Over the years, I've heard rumours about all sorts of mysterious things in Victoria, many of them already mentioned here. A person who gave me an accurate description of the drain under Ross Bay Cemetary also claims that he was in a tunnel from the basement of Vic High to the Bay Street Armoury. He had valid reasons for being in both Vic High (student) and the Armoury (cadet) at the time.

Another associate who used to work at Chandlers claims there were numerous large rats blocking him from following a tunnel from the Chandlers basement. This is further confirmation of what others have already suspected/claimed.

A street person told me about a false gravestone in Pioneer Square (the little cemetary on Quadra across from the YMCA) that was an entrance to "the underground". I'm skeptical about this one because he wouldn't show me where it was, but I've always wondered about this one.

I was up at the property on Ash Road (what the kids call "the 6 driveway") a couple of times about 6 years ago. The house is, of course, long gone. The land was basically left to grow wild, except for one strange spot. It was a teardrop-shaped patch of nice green grass (had obviously been watered), surrounded by a two concentric hedges (each forming a closed loop) about 4.5 feet high and about a foot wide. The hedges had been recently trimmed, and the grass within had been mowed somehow. It was a bit large than I'd expect a grave to be, but I can't imagine what else it would be. An associate who attended a local school with the daughter of Michelle (yes, Michelle Remembers) claims she confirmed that this was indeed the location of one of the houses in the book. How anyone can be certain about this, I'm not sure, since the memories were retrieved years later by hypnosis (allegedly). That's what I was told. There were a few paths leading off into some thick bush, but we did not explore them due to the ridiculous amount of spiders and webs that literally filled in the path. My younger sister had been there a few years before and said she found a "weird bridge". I've tried to get her to go there with me over the years, but she always refuses (she's terrified of the place for some reason).

I worked in Chinatown for many years and had an opportunity to see a few things others may not. As much as I would like to share my experience publicly here, I don't feel safe doing so. What I saw relates to the underground gambling and to tell my story would likely identify myself to anyone who was there at the time. I don't really need Chinese gangsters shooting me. If anyone wants to know (who I'd feel is trustworthy, such as KK, Peterman, Tanuki), I'll share these stories in person. I do not want to suggest that I have an externally accessible entrance to the Chinatown tunnels, but I do have some firsthand knowledge of a Chinatown tunnel accessible from the inside that was in active use quite recently (and likely still is).

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Urban Exploring. And welcome to our beloved Under the Garden City thread. I'm always impressed when newbies show up to offer their personal experiences of life in Victoria. Your experiences only validate when I've known/understood for years: something odd works under the streets of this nice, clean and well-lit city.

This Chinatown story of yours seems eerily familiar. I've heard pretty much the exact same story from a number of very credible sources. Many people in this city would be astonished to learn the extent to which authorities forgive massive gambling operations that thrive in this little corner of Canada's oldest Chinatown. I'm talking about the kid of gamesmanship where very comfortable people drop hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single play. It doesn't bother them. I doubt they even reflect too deeply on their loss, other than perhaps to wistfully remark that Lady Luck wasn't on their side.

Thankfully, their money troubles are completely foreign to me. Unfortunately, their money problems stand out as a major insult to a segment of Victoria's society that has been historically pushed to the very edge of the shoreline...both literally and metaphorically. The person who alerted you to the 'entrance' in the parkade is a perfect example of the growing disconnect between wealth and sub-standard urban existence.

If you're interested, PM me and we can work something out.
