| | | UER Redesign Contest < on 6/14/2006 9:46 PM >
| | | In the wake of Slashdot's successful redesign contest, and realizing that UER's design is getting kind of old, I think it's time to look into options for a new design. So, I am pleased to present: The UER Redesign Contest! Come up with a new look for UER, to be applied throughout the whole site. Forums, LDB, events pages, private messages, etc. To give you an example of what I need initially, here is the designfile that Crossfire sent me so long ago which resulted in the current look:
Your design should include all of the current navigation sections in a clear and easy-to-understand way, should provide a clear and easy-to-read colour scheme for the rest of the site, and more. The 'winner' of the contest will have their design featured as the main interface for UER, currently the largest Urban Exploration website worldwide. The winner will also receive a credit at the bottom of every page (see where Crossfire's name appears now). I am only looking for original designs that would be a good fit to UER. Don't just copy the style of 'slashdot' or 'digg' or some other site and submit it. Post your submissions and any questions here! Good luck! -av

| | | AV, Are you simply looking for a design concept for which we would provide a sample, or would we need to provide coding for you to reproduce it? Sorry if that's seems stupid, I'm not a tech type. [last edit 6/14/2006 9:54 PM by Jonsered - edited 1 times]
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | Are you looking to move to a css based layout and ditch the tables? If so, you're in for a *lot* of work. It's worth it afterwards, tweaking layout issues becomes as simple as fiddling with a single file Best of luck, dsankter

| | | I'm just looking for the graphics. Let me deal with the code. I probably won't go with all-CSS -- it's way too much work for very little return. It's a good idea with a new site, but doing it to an existing site is a headache and a half.

| | | Well, hopefully that won't happen. But if I don't see a design that I think looks good (and that other people also like), we will have to simply keep the current design. -av

I don't know. I like the current layout. But then, I'm used to it so maybe I should see what the grey matter can come up with.

| | | A question about the implementation of the winning design, can we choose from a variety of skins instead if we prefer the current one, or if we want to change to any of the new ones?

| | | Thanks for taking my suggestion seriously, but if you're going to do a redesign, you might as well go with a CSS based, symantically correct design, it is a bit more work in the forefront, but can in the future result in less work for you, should you choose to institute either another redesign, or perhaps multiple themes. As much as the locals around here hate UER, I find these things fun, so I might come up with something if I have time. I know you're a web-developer or something, and I'm a designer, so I would be willing to help with the CSSifying of the code, that you have, I'm fairly good at doing this, and have already done this process for a number of other websites, both for work and personal sites of friends and such. You might not see much return, but trust me it's there, and worth it.

The corporate edition is invaluable. Even if you're not in a corporate environment (say, at a café), it doesn't attract attention, so you don't have more-or-less 5 civilians (read:non-explorers) ask you about the hobby. But how many explorers would want to see that all the time?!
The grey colour scheme is always so distinctly "UER", change it all, but leave the grey colours. Really, I find the current design visually appealing and functional. But in a messy, non-concrete and ever-changing world, it would seem odd that UER remain static (as in "showing little change").
