Did anyone ever check it out after it was closed? I haven't been able to go due to transportation reasons, but if it's still up I'll check it out during the summer.

From an eyewitness report: completely leveled. Evidently there is nothing left of Astroworld. Six Flags in New Orleans is another story....

Six Flags in New Orleans is still standing but pretty battered from the hurricane. I was told over the weekend that there are no plans to reopen it.

The parking lot has become a giant FEMA trailerpark.

last I read/heard, they were going to open it but not this season. But then again, you never know when your talking something that far out time wise with a company in as major a transition as Six Flags is. I was just reading a website on amusement parks that I cam across that was like a news letter for the industry that was talking about a ton of parks that are closing. I'll look it up at work tomorrow and see what I can find out, I had been meaning to post it anyway since it was something with quite a bit of potential for people.

Where was all the AstroWorld rides and such taken? I heard it was all auctioned off.

Too bad it is leveled. I was told that they had some utility tunnels under it. I bet their gone now.

A friend of mine went down to Texas recently and found out that Six Flags wrote off Astroworld as a complete loss. Something to do with displaced New Orleanians, and a few bad seeds going to town on ripping the place apart, according to her, and that was in mid-April. She said it was closed, but didn't say whether it was demolished or not.

http://www.sixflagshouston.com is now a tribute site to the history of the park.

For those interested here is a site that was posted in the thread 2X linked to.

http://www.oldastroworld.com/

On the left of this page there is links to a demolition album and several auction albums.

This may sound stupid but does the city of Houston have another theme park that replaces astroworld? I may be there and be very popular, but I just havent heard of one or at least I cant remember hearing of one. It is hard to imagine such a large city without a major theme park if there is not one now.

Nope. Six Flags in Arlington and San Antonio are the only options. There has been a long running rumor that Disney has purchased land along I45 between Dallas and Houston for a theme park, but I'll believe that when I see it...

Wow! It is hard to believe that such a large city has no major theme park. Why did Astro World close anyway?

CEO/CFO decided that it wasn't worth the investment that they were putting into it, although it was doing great. *shrug* that's business sense for you..
