I dunno.. I think local kids usually do a pretty good job at finding stuff like this regardless of whether or not it's in the DB or if you choose to keep it to yourself.

Hello, Im Dennis, Im new to UER.

It discusses me the disrespect people have for our history. We went down there and painted white over the graffiti and like 2 days later it was done again. I expected that to happen, just not so soon. But I did notice that the original taggers did not come back, and the last ones were much less talented, which tells me their probally very young and new to taggin.

Theres a giant hole in the wall now.

I dunno what the answer is. Hide behind trees with baseball bats? Not that I advocate violence seriously. But I pity the one dumb clod who I come across in my travels - he will bear the full punishment of the sum total of all my pent up anger against all the assholes of the world. Whether it's an idiot kid stealing lightbulbs from outdoor Christmas decorations, or someone trying to toss a pumpkin through my livingroom window... or someone I catch tagging. They may find themselves face down in a ravine somewhere. Or in some culvert no one will visit for years.

I've had a good long lifetime of being apathetic. My patience is about to burst. Be warned. I may not be able to stop myself from thrashing someone until I get dragged off by police.

The solution is simple. Don't be an asshole.

It always amazes me when people talk like this. You don't know how much smoke you're blowing. I see some people say some things on this board that are ... what? Bravado? I wouldn't decided to be some kind of wild-sites vigilante, if I were you. You may identify with those sites, but they are not yours. You, are -- respectfully or not -- tresspassing. Compound that with an assault charge, and you're life will change in ways you don't want to know about. What you're talking about so cavalierly is a lot of impetuosity for almost no return. If you want law and order, then stick to the PATH. If you want exploration with possibilities, then you'd better accept that others may see things differently, and they may have an aerosol can in their hands. C'est la vie.

There's got to be a middle ground here. I don't advocate beating up people who vandalize or tag a site, but the mere punks who graff sites (not the artists, the graff kids who spray "Smok Pot Al Day!" or "420!" or "Jimmy Liks Dick!" all over the place) need to be shown that they're ruining these sites and likely increasing security on them. But apathy is a powerful enemy to doing the right thing.

Oldtimer, the solution to a life of apathy is not grabbing a bat and hiding in the bushes waiting for someone to cross the line of your particular view of right and wrong.

From my walk through, i came to realize that there are things worth saving and things not... the tunnel is not.

There is nothing significant to preserve, it will collapse in 50 years anyways. If it is "haunted" , it would be independent of any graffiti that may be present.

Its going to collapse much sooner than 50 years if work is not done on it. More than likely within the next 2.

It's not going to collapse. With the seaway road overhead, they need to keep that tunnel together or the road overhead will collapse into it. I think they may fill it completely eventually, but it's not going to collapse.

The part where its collapsing is no where near the road over head, it is much further beyond that. I don't think it will collapse where the road goes over.

The Tunnel is not going to collapse. Although it leaks at the one end . It runs under a canal between 2 locks , its to be expected for its age. This is just my opinion but I dont think the Seaway people, whos property its on, would let the canal collapse. Hence a maintenance door, if work does need to be done in the future...

The tunnel runs under an abandoned canal, and the seaway has not done any maintenance on this canal since about 1925. So why would they ever care about saving it. I have been down in the spot of the canal where it is collapsing and there are major cracks that will never be repaired. Their not going to waste their time and money on a canal they never use, when they have a brand new one.

THE WALL IS COMING DOWN

Apparently somebody didn't like the wall and tore it down.

Now the tunnel just looks like hell, instead of an interesting architectural artifact from days-gone-by.

I havent had a chance to visit the GT tunnel since they bricked it up. However I saw some photos of the tunnel and people had already ripped out the steel gate door they installed.

The grate door as pictured here in October of 2005 has already been damaged I am told.

I'll pay the site a visit soon and post some current photos.

Was at the BGT on April 1St and was able to gain access. The gate was open and there was a large hole in the block wall.

The tunnel DOES indeed run under the Seaway Haulage road, and must be kept intact.
I am sure they could build up the area of collapse to fix the road, but it would be a lot eaiser to just make sure the tunnel doesn't collapse.
The tunnel WILL indeed collapse in the next 5 years if regular maintence is not done. In just one year the leakage has more than doubled, the holes in the ceiling are getting bigger and bigger, I think if we would have had a harsher winter and the water in the tunnel would have froze again, that the contraction and expansion would have done it in, or at least close to it.
And as for the statement made by Audi...
The tunnel is a HUGE piece of history, it's almost 125 years old, it's one of the first train tunnels in all of Canada, Brockville being the first.
It was built in less than 1 YEAR and the architecture is amazing. I don't agree with you at all, it should actually be a historic landmark and part of the canal history. But hey, that your opinion.

The BGT is even more vandalized now. I took a hike along the 3rd Welland Canal (which the BGT runs underneath in between Locks 18 and 19) and when I went to snap some pics of the tunnel, the is even more graffiti and litter all over the place. It looked like someone stole someones mail collection for a bonfire, disgraceful if you ask me!

I was down in April 2007, quite the mess, the Seaway has given up on it. There is a lot more grafitti. I would LOVE to find these morons that are painting on historic limestone, and go to their homes and paint their precious pimped out cars that daddy bought them.
