April's National Geographic has an article about Chernobyl and the new sarcophagus that is being built.

A new sarcophagus will be useless...

At the time of the accident over 90 percent of the radioactivity was hurled into the atmosphere. Everything was disclaimed from Russian and/or Ukrainian gov - corruption was owing to. They say that 90 percent we're caught inside the sarcophagus. A big lie ... the sarcophagus is only a very cheap (& rusty) construction full of holes. A "swiss cheese"

Post by Conundrum

does anyone have photos of the sarcophagus and the actual plant? this site has always been something thas has amaized me.

I read an article a while ago that the new sarcophagus was mostly being put up to seal in the old one, which was very shoddily built and is likely to collapse before long, sending a whole load of radioactive dust up into the atmosphere. if it's not contained.

The official estimates I've both heard, and been told on the tour, was that it only released approximately 4% of the potential radioactive waste into the atmosphere, and yes, the sarcophagus is in such an incredibly bad shape that it needs to be repaired/replaced as a matter of utmost urgency lest the rest of the material be let loose.

They are building a new sarcophagus to sit over the top of the old one. Hopefully it won't end up requiring more and more over the coming years.

That's the official version...
One year ago some german and ukrainian scientists entered the sarcophagus (together with a camera-team of a german tv-station). Radioactivity is still in place but they found NOTHING of the nuclear waste, which was kept inside the reactor's core. Nothing of the highly contaminated stuff.

In addition they also found nothing from the concrete and quartz sand, which were allegedly used to seal the core. There's only one explanation for that: Most of the mass must have been hurled into the atmosphere at that time.

Thanks for the tip! I had it in a pile, and usually don't have the time to pick it up and go through the whole thing. But this article is amazing! Lots of great photos of Pripyat and the Sarcophagus.

That link was awesome. How incredible to still be smoldering away after 20 years. I cannot believe the elderly people returning, wow, and then to succumb to alcoholism.

What is it that is so backwards about their Governments mentality, in regards to denial? N.

It's not any stranger then US government's denial about futility of war in Iraq. Governments do things like that....

Honestly, I like Elena's story - it was good. I was not too happy to find out it was all faked, mainly because I had become invested (aka infatuated) with the idea of blasting through the desolate streets at unreasonable speed. With a pretty girl to boot - what could be better.

I think she would have been much better off writing it and promoting it as fiction, she'd probably be in a much better place now if she had (book deals, talk shows...whatever).

That really ruins my fantasy of blasting down the deserted roads kicking up a rooster tail of death on my chopper. Easy Isotope and my sidekick Smashed Atoms. I am depressed. I thought everything on the net was true.

-remember everything I tell you is a lie, except for this-

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

I wonder if anyone ever snudged her bike seat?

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

There was a story about it on te Australian 60 Minutes tonight. My supervisor at work told me about it so I watched with glee!

Beautiful footage of overgrown fields, deserted villages, discarded shoes in the forest. Wonderful stuff. I have never been jealous of Richard Carlton until now.

From the site:
It's now 20 years since that disaster, the worst nuclear accident in history, but Chernobyl is still exhibit A in the case against nuclear power. And with good reason

Yes, because bisection and understanding how an old design of reactor failed 20 years ago has tons of relevance to how new and current modern reactors work, right?

Given that a modern nuclear reactor is designed in an intrinsically safe manner.

Stupid media.

Where did you get your 90% figure?

"Only" (a word I use advisedly, since it was still the radiation equivalent of 20 Hiroshima bombs) about 3.5% -- or seven tons -- is estimated to have been expelled. Out of 200 tons of fuel, about 160-180 tons have been accounted for and are inside the Sarcophagus. Given seven tons that were expelled, that still leaves quite a lot of "missing fuel", but no one knows what is under all the debris that was dumped on the reactor to put out the fire. Be that as it may, 90% is simply incorrect.

If you want facts, read Wormwood Forest a natural history of chernobyl. It's the most balanced and informed treatment of the subject by far. I originally posted her some time ago about the website www.chernobyl.in.ua But the book is better.

Since then, I've had the opportunity to visit the zone and what a fascinating place it was! I wish I had had more than just a day.

I just watched this. And have several comments:

First of all, it was moving to see Rimma Kyselytsia (60 minutes transcribed her name differently than she told me, but no matter). Here's a great picture of her http://chernobyl.in.ua/en/ghost_town/42 -- and there are others on the website as well. After reading "Wormwood Forest, a natural history of chernobyl", in which she played a big role, I planned my day trip to Chernobyl around her schedule so that she would be my guide and I'm so glad I did. She was a real sweetheart, informed and passionate about the place. We were in occasional email contact afterwards and it was after she didn't respond to several of my messages that I learned she had died. She had a warm way about her that made me deeply saddened by her death, even though we spent a mere 4-5 hours together.

Back to 60 minutes. It was a pretty good program. My only gripe was in the scenes from the Belarus orphanage for mentally impaired kids, which I considered horribly exploitative and sensational. The reporter says something to the effect of: no one say for sure if birth defects like these are caused by Chernobyl. If so, then why spend so many minutes showing these unfortunate children? The implication is that they are Chernobyl victims. But the program is deliberately vague about where the orphanage is ("the middle of nowhere") and there's no way of knowing where in Belarus the kids are from. It's a sad fact that mentally impaired and deformed children are born all over the world. Belarus has in fact reported an increase in childhood deformities. But that's also in regions that were uncontaminated.

It was particularly egregious to show that poor boy with cerebral palsy who was dying. Yes, good PR for Adi Roche and her Children of Chernobyl project. But what did it have to do with real victims of Chernobyl?

Sorry for that vent, but after I actually going there, I've become completely engrossed by the subject.

Saying that "radioactivity is still in place" is meaningless.

"Nuclear fuel" is inside a reactor core, not "nuclear waste" -- which is stored elsewhere. If you mean "spent nuclear fuel", that too is something different than "radioactive waste", and is also stored elsewhere. If by "the highly contaminated stuff" you mean "fission products", which are the main component of "spent nuclear fuel" and are indeed highly radioactive, then I doubt that a German tv crew, or any tv crew, would have gotten close enough to look for it in the caverns of the Sarcophagus. Most of that kind of UE is done by robots and sensors. Even if, in some fit of fantasy, some tv crew actually got close enough to the "core", of course they wouldn't find much. Nearly all of the fuel melted and streamed around the reactor building, creating lovely objects like this: http://chernobyl.in.ua/en/disaster/9 That was done by a photographer that jumped in and out of the location. If the German TV crew wanted to find it -- and it's a very well known bit of "highly contaminated stuff" -- I'm sure they could have filmed it as well.

If you want to dismiss the "official version" I'd be very interested to hear it. But you need to be more careful with your terminology and facts.

I just found out this site and this forum. I am a little bit shocked to see Elena's site is fake. I found it about 2 (?) years ago and the photos and the content was deeply amazing.
My question is: what exactly is fake? Ok, it's said she is not a biker, her father is no scientist, she only took the "standard tour". What are all the photos then? Some are faked you say, fine. What about the rest? And the facts? So the land isn't radioactive anymore (or, isn't radioactive as much as she says?)? Etc etc.

The original website was completely fake. The story was a lie and photos were scanned from coffee table books. The photos were "real" in the sense of not being photoshoped. But most were anachronisms -- they were old and did not depict what was happening at Chernobyl when the website appeared. The science was wrong, and the writing was barely comprehensible, though it had a certain charm.

After the website became the big thing on the web, Elena and her husband took a standard tour (that anyone can get through Kiev travel agencies) where she carried a motorcycle helmet. They did their own pictures (staged a few shots, too) and added them to the website. Sometime in the meantime, Elena also won some English-speaking champions who spiffed up the writing.

So, it's still fake because Elena didn't take most of the pictures on the website (her husband did) and didn't write the text.

And she most certainly did not ride a motorcycle there.
