| | | I believe this has been covered, but since I'm feeling lazy and don't want to search posts: www.lockpicks.com www.lockpickshop.com - I've heard that if you e-mail the owner he will accommodate just about anything www.hawleylock.com - a new one I found the other day. They supply the higher quality brands. You can also make your own using bla bla bla you've heard all this before. Good luck! ~Grit.

| | | I'm sure these aren't the best quality picks, but they are apparently usable. A set like this could be convenient to keep in a wallet for when unexpected UE inspiration strikes. It's certainly one of the most interesting business cards I've seen!

| | | Lock picks are a nice thing to have, but if you have a run-in with Barney Fife, you might earn yourself a stay in the Mayberry jail for a night. Something about suspicion and burglarious instruments that cops seem to think you're up to no good with. I mean, if you were a cop, how easily would you believe someone who was carrying a lock pick kit if they said they only jimmied the door open with the sole intention of taking pictures, rather than swiping stuff? Just be careful with that stuff.

You can find that thing anywhere, it's about as common as dirt.. in a pile of dirt.

| | | Depending on your local laws just be more carefull.. but generally I go under the idea that if I got searched the cop wouldn't even realize they are picks and think it's a small pocket knife.. (I have the Jackknife Set)

| | | The jackknife set is a decent set to have, just for that reason. In most cases, a cop won't take the time to unfold every little thing just to see what's in it. They usually just disregard them as a pocket knife. A jackknife set is what I would recommend if you're going to carry any picks on you, for any reason whatsoever.

| | | Thanks, I didnt know if it was still in existence or not, the thing was so old. I have heard its not a great tool anyway, but before I read it, I had no clue how locks even worked. My dad found it somewhere and gave it to me when I was in High School.

| | | The jackknife sets are good but not as good as individual picks, IMHO...not as much sensitivity and it can slow you down trying to switch from pick to pick while holding tension on the lock ... good for stealth though! ~Grit.

I have to completely agree, I would MUCH rather use normal picks then the jackknife.. but the Jackknife is something that I can just carry around everyday, normal picks I would only bring if I know there was no threat of being harassed by cops (in other words when my friends call me locked out of thier houses)

That leads to another interesting sub-topic....how to best disguise a tension wrench and a maybe 2-3 of your favorite picks. For example, if I know there's a standard Master padlock in my way, or even just in case one GETS in the way, all I need is a tension wrench and diamond pick. Carrying those two items would likely come in handy, but, carrying them is also "possessing burglary tools" which only applies if you're doing something suspicious...like...urban exploration. But they're really tiny, light, and thin. Off the top of my head, I bet you could build some into a flashlight housing in a way that wouldn't be discovered. Also, a hollow in a hiking boot might work. I'd say that to qualify as a "good idea" it'd have to withstand the standard "county lockup" search. IE: Strip down, raise 'em up, drop em, bend over, I'm sure others of you know the whole drill, which rules out hiding them just from sight. So, flashlight, boots, a pen maybe?, eyeglass repair kit, a disposable lighter (make sure its empty genius), manicure set, a cassette tape with most of the tape taken off the reels, and of course the jacknife version (which I also dislike because of the weight and lack of sensitivity.) | | | I put them in my butterfly knife, it keeps them from poking me too. However, this is likely to create more problems than it solves. I generally take the ditchable aproach, If I were to be apprehended I'd drop them while walking over to security/the cops. Makes you less suspecisous and you no longer have burglary tools. Don't be obvious though. If i wanted them hidden id prob go with the shoe approach, or praps just slide them in my 4D maglight.

| | | Another good place to hide picks is sew a pocket or sew them directly into the inside of your belt on the small of your back.. Also a good place for a handcuff key, or Razor for the Zip cuffs.. Also another option is get a keyring full of bump keys for the major lock types, I would be willing to put money on it that a cop wouldn't realize what they were.. I really do like the flashlight idea too, I think that'd work pretty well with minimal customization.. I would check the laws in your area about the butterfly knife, I think they may still be illegal in a few states..

| | | As for the butterfly: Illegal in PA, and legal in md only if you have a reason to have a one-handed knife (for your job or something). As such, this hiding place "creates more problems than it solves). I typically won't take a butterfly UEing, as it is another charge and makes me look shadier. Good idea on the belt though, I have a two-ply belt i may try that on.
