Drain Game

Well,
I was bored so I thought I'd try riding my bike into a drain a couple of miles from the house. It wasn't much of a drainpipe but it was an interesting trip , from the logistical standpoint of downhill drain biking.
JUst inside the entrance was a covered pile o' stuff that looked pretty fresh so, not being sure if someone was sleeping in it, I started to walk over while rolling my bike on the far wall when the pile awoke. I was like" It's OK I'm just passin' through..." And the long haired aging bearded C.H.U.D. guy was understandably flustered, confused, pissed and spooked all at the same time. I made my way past as quickly and unobtrusively as one can in a 6' drainpipe and he watched in disbelief as I disappeared into the darkness. About halfway to the river, I came to a room that was around 10'X10'X 8' high with grates on 2 sides and a manhole at the top. I went as far as I could until I got to the flood control door at the levy where the water suddenly got a couple feet deep and decided that without propper gear, it might be best to retreat. I sure didn't want to disturb Mr Homeless Draindweller so I pondered my dilemma back at the little room and, after disassembly, was able to shove the wheels through one side of the grate, the seat through the other, climb a muddy assed piece of wood up to the manhole (almost to the manhole) while holding on to a nasty piece of rope I found and tied to the frame and then hauled it up with a whole lot of fenagling through the top and reassemble it for the ride home. All in all a weirdly interesting trip.

hey Barry,

I put that piece of wood there last night....it was slippery as shit since there was mud all around it. I was all stoked that I found this pipe...and was planning a trip deeper into it. I went under the levey and came to that same pool. In the other direction, i only went to the first off-shoot...but not much further than that.

Im going to post some pics in a bit of another tube pretty close to that one. If you havent been in it we should go check it out....it looks like you have to raft in.

Yup!
CHUD in Urban Camo.
You're right, I DO owe him something for barging in unannounced like that. I'm thinkin' self opening canned goods like soup and stuff.

Thanks!
Looks like I'm on sale on eBay again. Hope SOMEBODY makes money off it. I sure don't.

Thanks, Tom!
I woulda been so screwed without that slippery little chunk of wood.
You should check out the one at Kidd Springs. It's an underground creek and definitely a wader but really cool inside.

I'm not really in to drains often but keep hoping to find some like the Aussies have. http://www.uer.ca/locations/viewgal.asp?picid=70159 Their website photos aren't up at present but check back. http://www.caveclan.org/ We Texans have a saying about the Cave CLan drain photos that goes: " HOLY SHIT!!"

IT has an OPEN / CLOSE mechanism above ground that looks like it might screw down but I couldn't say for sure. It looked like the guillotine of Damocles from underneath.

Thats kinda why I find myself getting into drains more and more now...I'm hoping to find something bad-ass one day. Its exciting to think that there may be some nutty underground world that no one knows about....but the teams of men who built them... With the amount of runoff we get down here I cant help but look down town and think of treasure to be found...

I read in the paper the other day, that crews will be lowering the water levels in the Brazos River in Waco to start work on a new low water dam project. Every time they do it, all sorts of crap turns up. One year, they found a car with a body still in it. Sorry I got off topic.... Whenever the levels are dropped, it usually dries out all the underground drainage tunnels throughout the city. I've never been down there, but I heard it's a pretty awesome site

Good thing the camera doesn't pick up odors. I was real nasty smelling. My dogs were real interested in where I'd been when I got home.
