Speaking of media. Here's another example of how UE starting to permeate the popular media and retail industry.
Not a bad book. A bit too many bizarre twists.

I was wondering what good fiction and non fiction is out there? I am running out of good current fiction to read and this sounds good.

Snow Crash is one of my favorites. I was wanting to find something contemporary. I will try a search too.

Thanks for the replies

Yeppers! In these books people are always inside old ships, airplanes, Aztec temples, etc. UE paradise!

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman, is a really great book with a lot of UE style imagery.

Another book is The Dig, by Alan Dean Foster, but they are exploring on another plant. Same idea, I guess.

Dying of the Light by George R.R. Martin. Basically takes place on an abandoned planet.

There is a book (I'll find the name and author) about that mentions actual exploring URLs.

I haven't read it. It's probably mentioned somewhere on UER?

Cheers,

Doug

Gene Wolfe has some interesting sites in his stories, South America, far,"far" into the future.

That has to be one of my favorite books...there's an absolutely beautiful old hospital that I think most of you would love. It's all about the parts of London that people don't usually see, anyway.

Other than that...I remember reading a short story set in the future, where absolutely everything is abandoned, and old houses are considered to be sacred places. I don't know the title, though. I'll post it if I think of it.

you know, in retrospect, there is a book I keep rereading over and over... it's a blast. Now prepare to roll your eyes in unison... "The Stand" by Stephen King. I love this book. Aside from the whole good versus evil thing, imagine an entire country that has been, well, been abandoned.

Just think of some of the delicious things out there to see...

Anyways, if you're going to read it, read the uncut version...

"Reliquary" (Sequel to Relic) by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child - protagonist has to explore the abandoned tunnels under NYC.

"The Rule of Four" - University Steam tunnel exploration

"MindKiller" by Spider Robinson. Imagine being on a UE and finding a fully stocked survival bunker.

"A World Out Of Time" Larry Niven - Returning to a largely abandoned Earth - stretching it a little with this one as it's more exploring abandoned buildings for X reason rather than U.E.

That's it off the top of my head.

John Saul's The Manhattan Hunt Club.

From Amazon:

"In Manhattan Hunt Club John Saul plumbs the depths of the Manhattan underground--the network of subway tunnels and secret caverns and chambers where the homeless denizens of the city have created their own society. It's a world Jeff Converse, a young college student convicted of a crime he didn't commit, never knew existed until he is plunged into it after an "accident" that occurs while he is being transported to prison. He soon realizes that it's no accident, but the opening move in a deadly game being played by some of the city's most powerful men and women, a game in which he is the prey and they are the hunters. Jeff's only chance to make it to the surface and survive lies in allying himself with a homicidal maniac who's appointed himself the young man's protector, but whose designs on Jeff are almost as lethal as those of his enemies in the Manhattan Hunt Club."

"We", by Yevgeny Zamyatin describes mostly abandoned sections of cities on the "outside". The book is essentially the predecessor to Nineteen Eighty-Four and has many of the same plot elements, themes, and a similar atmosphere.

Bonus if you can read the original which was written in Russian.

Much of "King Rat," by China Mieville, takes place in the sewers and on the rooftops of London. Also appearing briefly are an abandoned barge lodged against a bridge footing in the Thames, an abandoned subway station and the towers of Battersea Power Station.

Oh, and it's the book that Neil Gaiman ripped off for both of his last two novels (American Gods AND Anansi Boys). It's quite an achievement to scam two different stories out of the same source.

"King Rat" sounds an awful lot like "Neverwhere", which was written two years before it.

One could say that Orwell ripped off Zamyatin like "The Island" ripped off "Parts: The Colonus Horror"--but everyone likes 1984.
