| | | ESL/TRW Test Site (Fremont Hills) < on 10/6/2005 3:09 AM >
| | | I saw some post regarding this place. I went up there a few days ago and took some pics. Thought I would share. I also got some information from some of the local Barn owners, fact I ran into some lady who gave me a pretty in depth run down regarding the location. According to what I have found and heard. This is a test Antenna site for the old ESL, now TRW, and has been up in the hills for sometime. (ESL is the company in Sunnyvale where an employee went on a killing spree..). Anyhow, the site does indeed have a Wire Mesh Model of a Upside Down Airplane. This model is indeed an Antenna. If you look at the pics you can see a lot of antennas around the site. Not sure why they are up there and why they are still in use. Word of caution, this place is under 24x7 watch.. Can you say Rent A Cop. I only saw one out there and did not even attempt to go onto the site. The road is close enough for anyone.. unless you want to climb the Airplane.. ;)

| | | That does look like an upside down airplane. Any idea as to why it would be shaped like that?

| | | According to the information I have found, the mesh airplane is a model of an RC 12. The RC 12 is a Guardrail Common Sensor [GR/CS], Corps Level Airborne Signal Intelligence. Here is a site with more information on them. http://www.fas.org...lect/guardrail.htm

| | | When they first put that site there, the area, due to being surrounded by hills, etc. was very 'quiet' in terms of radio signals. But there are numerous microwave radio sites on some of the surrounding hilltops now. When I went by it one weekday afternoon 2 years ago, there were two old-timers there working at the site. They looked at me, but didn't do anything while I sat in the car just down the road a little & looked at the antennas & took some photos. Of course, there are all sorts of retards on the net who have never been there, but see some of the test pads in aerial imagery & think that they must be the tops of missile silos or entrances to some massive underground bunker... I don't think ESL still owns the site. Didn't they get absorbed into a larger corporation? Might be Lockheed-Martin now. Anyway, the company that owned/owned it used to have a brief mention of this antenna test range on their web page.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people. |
