Hey, I'm not too new to this site but I've still never met up with someone I've met here.
I'm 18 in November so I've been tentative about meeting with strangers because of my minor age status. Are there any tips or extra steps I can take to make sure I meet up with someone safely?

I'm Missouri STL based and would love to know of anyone who would like to meet up sometime. Especially people just older than me, I'd like to learn a lot about my area and the taboo of URBEX.

I know I'm young, but I don't let that hold me back in any area of my life. I'm not scared of meeting up with someone, but I do want to know all I can about being safe. Plus, STL is dangerous in general, so it would be nice to travel with others.

Don't worry, if you're under 18 we can always use more people around with a clean record and fingerprints that aren't in the system.

Just kidding. Of all the people I've met in person while doing this, the vast majority have gone on to become close friends. I can't think of any advice specific to your location, but it's always good to team up with people on certain sites, even if that doesn't necessarily mean meeting in person right away. And it's worth looking out for any kind of meetup events, provided they aren't held in a hotel and you have to buy a ticket.

Well as more of a just meeting up with people in general from anywhere online:

1) Talk with them online for one, get a feel, see if there's other interests

2) Meet somewhere public - like cafe or food or something, chat, pay attention if you feel uncomfortable other than meeting new person anxiety

3) Let someone know who you can trust where you're going

4) Keep your phone charged. Get a battery pack and make sure it will be.

5) Might seem extreme to some, but carry mace or something if you can
personal alarm, etc
(not to scare you but i dunno, I carry stuff regular on me since I tend to just stroll around the cities here late - not even for urbexing and it gives a sort of comfort that I'm not defenseless)

Like I've met up with people from online pretty much all my life and thankfully I haven't had any awful experiences except them just being very awkward or a bit bigoted. And then just cut my losses, let them know we didn't mesh well, and that's about it.

Like hitchhiking, it's generally a good sign if they're as cautious of you as you are of them.

No hotels, noted. This fills me with confidence, thank you.

I've always followed my own set of rules when meeting people granted this comes from a corrections and security perspective that I like to be in an open area where I have multiple ways out that and is especially well lit at night if a night time meet up is the only option. Granted this is definitely old habits and training is telling me. MY biggest piece of advice is that you should carry at least one or two items for self defense. Examples of these could be pepper spray, a knife, stun gun, etc. Be safe out there.

Funny how this advise could double for a first date you met online. Meeting in a public place first is essential.

I wouldn’t carry anything more than pepper spray or a knife. And if you pull a knife, make sure you know how to use it cause it could easily be taken off of you. A stun gun or taser could be trouble depending on the state and give you more serious charges besides just trespassing.

Definitely a great point to be made Rinzler. In some states for sure it could cause more trouble. I go day to day on a simple saying "Two is one, one is none."
