When in danger, when in doubt, RUN IN CIRCLES, SCREAM AND SHOUT!

| | | Posted by rakeman I visited Hunter's Point a few weeks ago. It doesn't look like the cleanup has substantially progressed. Security was very lax when I visited: I only saw one car; it was sort of hidden behind a building but with a decent vantage point to the site.
| Superfund site cleanup is itself a huge, on-going mess when you combine the facts: 1. Very few HAZMAT contractors 'qualified' to do the work. 2. Prior/current HAZMAT remediation contractors/sub-contractors being accused of ineptitude or intentional malfeasance, whistle-blower lawsuits from terminated employees who tipped-off local/state/federal authorities. 3. $$$, including rising $$$ to transport & store the contaminated soil. 4. Bickering between local/state/federal authorities, all of who have eyes & opinions/regulations on the project. 5. The usual California/SF Bay Area/SF political fighting over the eventual use for the land -- redevelopers want maximum profits, the gov't makes all sorts of demands like numerous parks, Section-8/"Below Market Rate" housing, etc. Over 20 years ago now, a friend who was a mid-level manager for the primary contractor firm leading the environmental restoration program (radioactive material cleanup) told me point-blank that the hazardous materials situation was a lot worse than was publicly known, and there was an effort to suppress the reality, instead of a uniform focus to do the job right and remove the hazards. BUT having rambled the above, it's a damn-cool site to explore/document! Does SFPD still have their crime lab there? Towards the 'far-end' or 'back-gate' on what 20 years ago was known as Crisp Rd was a mysterious compound that had some minor "UCSF Hunter's Point Facility" signs but otherwise seemed intentionally unmarked. Seemed abandoned. I dunno why, but I assumed it was some low-profile 'animal-research' facility. Anyone visit it/know more about it? Also, 20 years ago, the building at the base of the huge crane was an active office for ??? I got about 100 yards away, and noticed that the vehicles & the way they were parked both suggested it was some small, secret squirrel LE operation. Anyone have more info on that building? Here are my almost 20 year old photos: https://www.flickr...72157635457158215/ /-/ooligan P.S. It's easy to overlook as you enter through the main entrance, because you're looking at all the cool stuff straight ahead & to the right, but after entering, if you make a left, you'll come across some old submarine pens & support buildings that are pretty cool to see, & need to be documented.
