95% sure that whole neighborhood is still there and still empty with like 6 - 10 houses lived in on one block (it’s weird). The ones I walked through a number of years ago had parquet floors just slowly rotting away and surrounded by encroaching modern, expensive developments.

When I was in the US Army, three posts were considered the best: Fort Lewis, WA; Fort Carson, CO; and Fort Ord. Fort Ord was closed due to BRAC. So much history disappearing.

I haven’t been to Ford Ord yet, but it’s been on my mind for ages since I’m just an hour north at UCSC, and my friend actually goes to CSU Monterey Bay which is right in the middle of the former base. This is a really cool thread to look through, so I’m glad I saw it pop up. Shame that so much has already been torn down. Has anyone here gone airsofting at the former barracks with Roundhouse Productions? Seems really cool.

I've been airsofting there a few times actually. It was (and I hope still is) the best airsoft field I had been to. I haven't been for a while, however I have fond memories there. If you have any other questions about the airsofting, send me a message

Damn!!

I knew it was only a matter of time, but this was one of my first explores (before I knew that was what I was doing). I went back to these barracks every year when I was in town for Thanksgiving - despite having seen them all probably ten times over. The last time I was there was less than a year ago.

Are the ones by the old swimming pool/hockey rink still there? I figured those would be the last to go since they were the oldest and most numerous, as well as the most interesting (and judging from all of the markings on the walls, they were the ones used for paintball!).

What a bummer.

I don't think I ever published any of these because I wasn't thrilled with how they turned out. I was attempting to do some light painting around the barracks but it was overcast and I didn't have anything but a mediocre flashlight with me. Still, since it sounds like the barracks are mostly gone, I thought I'd share a few here. These were taken in December of last year (2019):

So my son is back to school in person in Seaside. So, I have to carpool 2 days a week. The drive is 45 minutes. So, I will be sticking around exploring whats left of the base instead of driving home.

I am exploring on my bike. So, I am in and out of these buildings quickly, just my iPhone and a wide angle lens. I am worried about having my bike snatched while inside these buildings.

Going to be exploring the Main Garrison wood barracks. Trying to find the least destroyed buildings. I managed to find and intact bathroom! Found some offices, property room with metal cages. Found a couple of cafeterias and small grocery store. Found the church and some building with a stage.

I also came across 2 pitbull mixes. They we guarding one of the buildings, with a bunch of bikes out front for adults and children.

Still documenting the buildings in the Army Ranger Area. I am also locating and documenting every remaining latrine in the training areas.

This place is going away bit by bit, great update on its current status.

A while ago some one on this thread mentioned a fallout shelter/reinforced bunker accessed by an elevator... any validity to that statement?

Once we were down there and went in through the gate below the Ranger /K9 area... I was able to drive (4x4 obviously) all the way there to the other side and came out by Target etc. It was a bit of fun.

That gate never seemed to be locked when I went by. Drove in there a second time and decided to explore the roads that were going south... came over a hill and drove right up on a CHP car. So I figured OK I'm busted and got out. All he does is say "oh the road is closed for a race, you can't go this way."

There was some kind of charity footrace going on. So I said OK thanks and left. I'm lucky he had no idea no one should have been coming from that direction.

Has anyone here checked out the impossible city lately?
That’s the one part of Ord that’s still on my bucket list. I want to light paint it.

For a moment, I wondered if parts of Ord were going to be sacrificed to the fire gods, but as far as I know, Ord was spared. This time, at least.

I second this - Impossible City is a spot I've wanted to visit for over a year now.

Last I heard, it was a pretty easy walk in, but I've also heard the opposite in years prior.

I’ve been warned by several different people that have explored Impossible City to be vigilant for local (and possibly not so local) law enforcement conducting trainings out there. Police, SWAT, and various agencies still use this location for their trainings on occasion.

Someone also mentioned something about a cougar sighting nearby, but it was one of those “friend-of-a-friend” accounts. I already know that they exist out there, but my plan to go alone, at night, and unarmed sounded less and less appealing after this nonetheless!

UPDATE!!

They are currently doing soil cleanup at the site of the wood barracks. They also have workers cleaning around the outsides of the wood barracks. Chain link fences have been repaired and more no trespassing signs have gone up on the southern portion, easy ingress still from the north. According a worker they will be demolished in the next 2 to 3 months.

The stockade has 2 to 3 months of cleanup still. Then demo will begin which will take 2 months.

The remaining hammerheads will come down to make way for Campus Town. This will also clear some Ord buildings that still being used, like the POM. So there may be a small window to explore these buildings.

So now is the time to visit.

As sad as it is that the wooden barracks & other structures are being torn-down, keep in-mind that they were built in the early 1940s, as "Temporary" or "Theater" (meaning, built to last no more than about 10 years) construction -- if you look at the full building #s, you'll see a T in front of the numbers, like "T-284." Any structures intended to be used for more than about 10 years would be Permanent construction -- cement, cinderblock, brick, etc.

So we should be glad the "Temporary" ones have lasted as long as they did, and while re-use isn't practical (say it'd be "cool" all you want, but the reality is you *don't* want to live or work in such an old, wooden structure with no insulation, lead pipes & paint, etc.), another reason they're being removed is because of of our pathetic society where people will try to turn them into dope dens, do $500 worth of damage just to steal $4 worth of metal, or simply try to SUE UCMB or Seaside if they trespass inside one of the buildings and they're injured when they fall through the 80 year old flooring, or get raped by some thug who had been living inside for the past couple months.

As of April 28th the wooden barracks are still standing. It seemed they were prepping for demo. Then after they did soil samples, they stopped.

This is one place I've been looking at for awhile, I live quite some hundreds of miles away to the south, and last time I was in the area I didn't know about it lol. If they're gearing up to demolish it all, I don't know that I'll make it in time. These are some cool pictures, is the place easy to access? I was never clear on that.

Nope, as of 2 months ago, the city decided not to renew the airsoft lease and tear everything down. Not sure if the buildings still stand, but airsoft is gone.
