The Great Northern Tunnel is a 1-mile (1.6 km) double-tracked railway tunnel under downtown Seattle, Washington, completed by the Great Northern Railway in 1905, and now owned by the BNSF Railway, on its Scenic Subdivision. At the time it was built, it was the tallest and widest tunnel in the United States, at 28 feet (8.5 m) high and 30 feet (9.1 m) wide.

Two crews of 150, one day and one night, dug this fucker by hand with picks, shovels, mine carts and timber scaffolding. They broke through a day early because some management sociopath created a rivalry between the night and day crews. Dudes should have unionized.

Nice one uLiveAndYouBurn! Did a train come when you went? Sure you know this.. Some explorers and I like 3-4 years ago explored the tunnel after being told thar if a train came on the track side we were on we'd likely be dead meat. Well a train came and I think we all got a adrenaline rush and ended up not determining which side it was coming from therefore we jumped and laid down on the sunken gravel on one side of the tracks and got to experience a blazing fast loud powerful train pass over our heads like three feet away. I got a picture somewhere.
