I like concrete. It’s either already collapsed or perfectly safe

What determines wether someone is a part of the new generation, or old generation. Is it determined by ideals, or by age?

I'd say that the community can be divided along two axis. I've created a chart to demonstrate this divide, with most explorers falling somewhere along the blue line.

Why specifically Instagram? I've only used it once to check it out and it didn't seem all that impressive. Facebook has more features. I will admit that I have posted quite a few of my findings on Facebook. But never publicly, never the location of said places (I generally also disable location meta data on my images) and I am not out for validation as much as I just like to share interesting things rather than sharing trash memes all day. This place seems like a relatively safer outlet to share the places I find.

I feel like I fall somewhere in the middle. I remember when I was little I used to stay on my grandmother's computer late at night browsing through action squads website. I was a bit sad to hear that they were slowing down on their explorations. Ironically I was never aware of this site's existence until recently. I also have been influenced by my mother who is into the paranormal and did her own little explorations over the years. Your graph seems a bit flawed in the sense that everyone here is out for an adventure. If it weren't for that why would you even do it in the first place? Doesn't have to be the prime motivation but there has to be atleast a little of a adventurous flame in you to do these sort of things.

If your uncle Jack were stuck on a roof. And he asked for your help. Would you help your uncle Jack off?

That thrill-seeking kind of explorer is more interested in producing content that makes other people think they're having fun, but it's probably a lot of hard, unpleasant work to make the videos, hire staff, line up corporate sponsors, etc.

I would also think YouTube has emerged as the main platform for new school urban explorers. That seems to be where the attention is focused now.

Its not really about new or old. Its more about experienced or non-experienced.

The two often mean the same thing, but not always.

Why specifically Instagram?

Because thats what everyone uses. Popularity and quick spread of information is a real killer of this hobby. It could be any platform really. Just happens to be Instagram (and YouTube) right now.

Its not yours to control and you should mind your own business with these other people unless you enjoy drama. The fate of the properties you visit is out of your hands.

This is the "new normal", a whole generation that feels entitled to locations, has no problem trying to make you feel guilty for not giving out locations, and is happy to post address on TikTok (at least in the Chicago area). Sadly they think that putting and address in Waze constitutes finding a location.

I've tried to educate some, but to be honest, since March 2019 I have focused on getting permission from owners to shoot their properties. I've opted not to post the full money shots on IG and posted cropped shots, so it's harder to find the locations. The truth is, once you post a shot you open that location to being found. I've got a small circle of those I share full frame photos with or those who are smart enough to follow me on Flickr, which rules out about 98% of those who follow me on IG.

I'm totally not hitting as many places these days, but with the pandemic I don't really mind. There are way more police cars on the streets in Chicago and since March it seems like everyone is out and about on the streets.

I've also been one of those who has made it difficult to get into places, reported "kids" to law enforcement when they have stupidly posted videos of them vandalizing and tresspassing under their own names on FB and YouTube, and I also, in some cases, after myself and others have shot in locations gone ahead and called the owners/property managers and reported seeing people exiting locations so they will get sealed up.

I
I think alot of it is an age thing and the obsession with likes. I am in my 40's, I haven't posted on Facebook for like 2 years and it was to tell my family to stop contacting me on Facebook when someone dies because I don't use it.

I just recently got a TikTok/ Instagram account because I am going 2 states away exploring in July and was trying to see if the places I wanted to go were still standing and was looking for recent pictures. On every photo post I saw, the comments were filled with "address?" "where is this" "give the address dude". When the photo owner explained that they wouldn't do that because of high traffic, people who lived in there area just kept posting the address over and over.

They have no appreciation of the place, respect for the poster or the art, they just need to know how to recreate that same scenario so they can generate posts.

Most of the younger crowd is easily identifiable by the lack of complete sentences and the smell of entitlement.

I can't blame it all on the younger crowd and their need for validation. I like to Geocache and the main rule is, to not give it away for other people. Yet I see youtubers finding geocaches OTHER people hide and showing how where they found it and how they solve it.

It's a shame. I am glad I lucked out and my 2 kids would rather be outside or with people than on their phones seeking attention.

Protect your places and your finds be stingy with that info.

I don't think giving locations to influencers is a good idea, they seek the limelight and can generate a lot of attention. Although I'm sure there are some that are trustworthy. Take this as a lesson learned, I'm sure you'll be more careful in the future.

This is annoying, especially for important events. Do people except me to have five social media apps on my phone all with notifications on? Not to mention all the data they would be collecting on my but that's another story. It's a phone, it has a phone number.
