I cannot stress this enough, never bring tools on a explore. Even a Leatherman can up the charges significantly if caught.

What's your opinion on bringing a leatherman? If you're going alone would you keep one in your pack?

This is basically the reason I've given up on trying to get friends into this kind of thing. I'll have people promise to keep locations secret, and then I'll find that they took their friends to those same places to tag them. I've also had people tell me that the whole point of this was to steal. I've only got one or two people I trust now, basically.

Everyone so far has really good advice but I'd just like to add... Dont let this bother you so much. Just do your thing and have fun. Stay ahead of the game and always move on to the next adventure. Dont get attached to locations because shit will always change for the worse. Took me a long time to fully understand this.

With years i got this too, and it's hard to explain to others without having lived it yourslef.

Locations will get demolished, trashed, looted. I spent so much energy on some...for nothing in the end, so really i go by what you just said, exactly what you just said.

" Just do your thing and have fun. Stay ahead of the game and always move on to the next adventure. Dont get attached to locations because shit will always change for the worse." ADV

I will continue to care and to have principles, but not on that extreme level anymore. I still will always do my best to leave no trace of my passage.

Sadly, the motivation for the new explorers seems to just not be the same anymore.

Yep! I've blown up a couple of good explores by sharing with 'trusted' explorers who passed it to their 'trusted' friends. The better the location, the less likely they will keep quiet.

I have one amazing find that two of us know about because we are the ones who found it.

This^ I've spent a LOT of effort and energy on particular locations before. I wouldn't take it back. I believe my efforts were worth it if nothing more than for the personal growth and adventure that comes from caring.

But you are right. Despite out best efforts the inevitable is unpreventable.

But that doesnt mean we should help it along or do what we can to add any extra life in anyway we can.

Do I have time to worry about locations like that these days?

No.

But that doesnt mean if I had the opportunity I wouldn't again.

Just enjoy the moment and put as much effort as is beneficial to your soul.

Great topic. I try to explain to new explorers that getting an address and putting it into Waze doesn’t equal actually finding a place on your own. Most of them are being spoon fed spots. I try to explain that until they find a place on their own and it blows up and gets vandalized they will never understand how to respect a location.
Most of these types couldn’t find a spot if it fell on them.

I think it's a wonderful tool but be prepared to ditch it or take a higher charge if caught.

I carry things I need but understand all I have on me may not be seen again. I would toss it if caught.

apparently you aren't well versed in your local trespass laws blackhawk. Many states lack a "simple" trespass law, and the charge defaults to criminal trespass regardless of what you are doing there.

Yes, yes I am...
If the property isn't secured ie fence with a locked gate and especially if not posted and you haven't been verbally warned, what I said is quit true in most states.
Intent has a lot to do with how a LEO will deal with you as well as your attitude.
A cop can arrest if they want to even if the charge doesn't stick...

I've been "caught" multiple times over the decades, even admitted to trespassing at Pennhurst to State Troopers, on active RR tracks by local and rail police multiple times/states (including Texas) with no charges or arrest.
Most times the LEOs didn't even verbally trespass me out allowing me to return in the future

It's not so clear cut.
Know where the line is and how far you crossed it, if any.
Cops are far less likely to overlook felony crimes than minor ones.
Don't be an arrogant ass with your trespassing intents or when dealing with LEOs.
WYSIWYG has served me well in dealing with LEOs.

True.

I have a LOT of experience dealing with TX LEOs, not so much while exploring but; in Texas I am pretty sure the private property owner must put up a fence or ask for a "no trespass". In other words the law doesn't just take it upon itself to arrest you for being on private property.

Sure in some locations and circumstances they may stop you and investigate what youre doing but unless the property owner has posted it or issued a no trespass warning I doubt there will be any prosecution. I understand the presence of livestock also rates an "understood" no trespass. At lest it used to, I have not looked at the PC Section 30.05 lately but it has a lot of stipulations. And its pretty broad in it scope.

The one time I did get stopped the Marshall TX PD caught me inside an abandoned foundry and told me to be careful. He was concerned for my safety, didn't even run my DL or LTC. A couple times Ive been observed by lawmen entering or exiting an abandoned / not posted location and they just ignored me.

I almost never go with other explorers because of this. My advice is if you don't trust them or know them well enough to bring them with you, don't share the location with them.

Exactly.
More so after 911 in most states. With livestock and crops no fence or warning signs are needed in many states ie active agriculture areas rate state felony trespassing charges.
Be careful about crossing active farmlands to access other areas even with no fence.

Ignorance of the law is no defense...

That’s not what the federal statute says!! I’ve crossed many a farm land to get into hospitals too. Luckily I was never caught.

Lol. What's next, active National Guard bases?
Just icing on the cake...
Fortunately cops tend to not enforce the agricultural trespassing unless you're destroying crops, stealing farm equipment, terrorism, etc.

Most farmers, at least in Texas are good old boys. If they don't shoot you on sight they probably wont press charges. Lot depends on how they feel and how you look.

I dare you to quote federal statutes in a Texas state district or county criminal court LOLOL!

Yeah that's a definite no no. The proper way to challenge that type of court system is just yes them to death, then refile in a higher court. Then never go back there...Well at least get caught.

I've been exploring for a while, but this is probably a rookie question so I'm sticking it in the rookie forum.

There are some baby explorers in my region who are super obnoxious. One tried to reach out to me as a woman who also explores, and I was really excited about it! Then she blasted one of my favorite locations on every site she could (I didn't take her there or anything, she did this on her own). I told her it wasn't a good idea because it gets these places shut down, trashed, burned down, etc. But she didn't change it. She still does this. I deleted her because it just seemed like a lot to deal with. She does a lot of things FOR THE LIKES AND VIEWS CLICK SUBSCRIBE.

Also, while I really don't have anything against graffiti (which is a position not everyone shares, I know), a bunch of them are leaving sloppy tags of their Instagram accounts. Like, idk, maybe this is a personal pet peeve, but if you're gonna tag something, at least make it good? Make it art? Try, even a little?

Is there...anything I can do about this? Without being a bastard?

I try to be friendly and welcoming, and I know people are free and are going to do whatever. But I also really want to protect these places.

Is there even a point to worrying about this?

I am new to exploring and I didn't realize that posting a lot about certain locations would put them at risk, thank you for the heads up! Incidentally, I only wanted to post most of my stuff here because I figured urban exploration exploits would be more accepted in this environment than say on facebook, haha. As for this girl ratting out your favorite locations, I believe that you have done all you can do and that there is no more point in worrying; you told her the risks of her posting these things out and you discouraged it, that's all you really can do. However, raising awareness to the new crowd of explorers, like me, about how posting things out can put some places in jeopardy is effective!

I don't really share locations. I'm more than willing to show people places if they ask but most people I know don't care anyway though.

This is why I pretty much only explore by myself now, or with one other person I can really trust. These new kids are gonna have the hammer come down hard on them after posting everything publicly on Instagram for likes. I don't necessarily explore less but I share much less, and almost everything's on private to some extent.
